Default My new budgie died :(

Hi everyone. I brought Earl (Early-bird) home just three weeks ago. He seemed perfectly healthy. Yesterday afternoon I found him dead. I can't imagine what could have happened. He was active and playful, eating just fine. He is the first budgie I've had (other than one I had as a child which I don't remember much about) I'm afraid that it was something I did wrong but I can't imagine what. I can't believe how attached I'd gotten to him in just three weeks, I am heartbroken. My 8yo son wants to go get another one but I'm worried that whatever happened to Early would happen again. Any ideas or words of wisdom please?

I am so sorry you lost Earl!
I wouldn't worry that you did anything wrong. AS long as you kept him in a clean space with fresh daily food and water then 3 weeks isn't long enough for it to be your home.

There is always a chance something like this will happen but it is not likely to happen again. Did you get Earl from a pet store? You never know the history or genetics of birds from stores. I have several and they have all been healthy though so it is usually ok.

Are there any breeders near you? Getting a bird from a good breeder will increase your chance of good health. If you live far from breeders then I would check out all the local stores and ask a lot of questions about where their birds come from. I found that my local Petco had the best policies for bird health and safety and providing vet care where the local store had sick birds from unknown sources and did not take their birds to the vet if they were sick. So you never know.

Personally, I would try again and not let this bad luck keep you from the joy of having a little buddy!

Oh I'm so sorry you lost Earl. That's just so sad and I can sympathize about losing a budgie. I wouldn't worry about it being something you did. From what I hear, budgies are great at hiding illness. So maybe he had something that you just couldn't see until it was too late. Anyway, again, I'm sorry and I hope when the time is right you'll get another budgie.

So sorry your little friend died. As already mentioned it is hard to say what could have happened. All we can do is what Cara said, fresh food and water and a clean environment. Caution must be used in the environment we house our little friends...Cooking with Teflon, non-stick cookware can create toxic fumes that will kill your bird. Most scented candles, cleaning chemicals etc. will also harm them. Having said all that, even doing everything perfect does not guarantee your bird wont get sick, and or die. Don't be afraid to get another, the joy they bring you will far outweigh the sadness you feel right now.

I am so sorry to hear this,I remember your post and how happy you were when you brought little Earl home.I agree with the others; losing a beloved pet is so hard but there are so many birds out there who could use a great home like yours and I think your son will learn from this; no pet comes with a guarantee of long life but, if we can make the life they do have a wonderful one, then it is worth the pain when we lose them. You gave Earl a great life that ,although short, meant a lot.I hope you can grieve for him and give another little guy the kind of life he had.Take care.

I'm so sorry for your loss... I'm sure your Earl knew how well you took care of him and how much he was loved during his short stay with you.
I hope with time you will start to feel better and maybe open your heart to another feathery friend.

Rest in peace, Earl. You will be missed.

You could have a necropsy done if you are looking for answers. If you decide on another bird I would try another store or a breeder in case it was infectious. And you would need to sanitize the cage very well. They are sensitive little guys so you want to make sure you don't have any environmental hazards in your home.

I am so sorry for your loss. It's so easy to become very attached. Since you loved him so much i hope you try again.

How sad , to come home and find Earl had passed on to the rainbow bridge.
Please don't blame yourself, as others have said it could of been something he brought with him you will not know. I do hope you can find enough love to try again it is always a gamble and not any one of us know how long a time they will be with us . Try to find a reputable pet shop or a local breeder, Hugs to you, they do become a part of your life so quickly and we all understand how you are feeling .
