Default Farewell Mr Mainwaring - Don't Panic

We are so sad, this morning both our budgies were fine, and when we went into the room a few hours later, Mr Mainwaring was dead at the bottom of the cage. We purchased them just over a year ago from a private owner who no longer wanted them (probably due to the noise as they were both very vocal) and the little fellows have brought nothing but joy to me ever since. We were told they were about 9 months old.

Now I am worried about poor Pike, as we were told Mainwaring was from the same hatching, so they have never been apart. Pike seems to be looking down in the cage, where Mainwaring was found.

There is no sign of any illness, but I will watch little Pike for a while, and then maybe get him a friend. I have a spare cage (their original one) so I can keep it in quarantine. Would it be best to get another boy? Pike is a bit of a bully - always wanting to be in on the action, whatever Mainwaring was doing, but they never fought.

Mainwaring, you were a little feathery bundle of beautiful joy, and I will miss you so much. I hope your short little life was better with us than the one you had before.

Rest in Peace, sweet handsome Mainwaring. Keep his cute face and happy song close to your heart, and he will be with you forever. They leave us much too soon. Hugs to you and Pike. I am so sorry for your loss.

I'm very sorry for your loss of Mr. Mainwaring.
Pike is going to be in mourning for his little friend so you'll want to spend extra time with him and give him lots of love and attention.

If you do decide to get another budgie as a friend for Pike, I'd go for another boy. After the 4-6 week quarantine period you can put the two cages next to each other for a week or so and then introduce them in neutral territory. Be sure to completely rearrange everything in the cage where you plan for the two of them to live. Perhaps even consider even allowing them to make the decision of whether or not to be in the same cage.

I am so sorry for your loss; Mr.Mainwaring may have had a shorter life but, at least for the last year, it was a very happy one thanks to you.I hope Pike adjusts to his life alone until you can get him a new friend. One day, your memories of your lost boy will be very sweet.Meantime, give yourself and Pike some time to mourn.Goodbye,Mr.Mainwaring,you were a much-loved friend and companion.

I'm so sorry to hear this... It's never easy to lose a much beloved pet so unexpectedly.
Be sure to give Pike some extra tlc, I hope you will both feel better soon.

Rest in peace, Mr. Mainwaring.

Thank you everyone for your kind messages and advice. We will mark Mainwaring's spot in our garden with bright yellow spring bulbs, to reflect his golden colour and golden heart. He has a marvellous view, overlooking the hills of the Suisse Normande in France, and an ancient priory. He is close to our beloved Maine Coone, Carrott - so maybe their souls will saw together.

Pike is doing okay today, eating and making a lot of noise as usual. We will give him lots of company - he is not tame, but hopefully he knows we mean him no harm. He is still nibbling his budgie toy rope chews etc., and having heated discussions with the budgie in the mirror!

Hi Jeanette,
I am so glad to hear that Pike is doing well; my two budgies are far from tame yet but I believe they know me now and have some attachment to me,so Pike will need your company as you wait to get him a new friend.Mainwaring's resting place sounds so beautiful, he was obviously a special boy so it is good to hear that he has a special place in your garden as well as your heart. He was a lucky boy to have you!
