Some of you may remember the feeder mouse I rescued back in the fall. He passed away today at the ripe of age of very old for a mouse. He's been not himself lately and I knew the time was soon and today when I got home from work at midnight, he was nearly comatose. I took him to the emerge vet and had him euthanized (for some reason they wouldn't let me be with him) right away. I didn't think I'd be as sad as I am. And I feel bad for all the times his cage wasn't quite clean enough or when I wondered if he was lonely. Or if I didnt put him to sleep soon enough. I know it's bad to think like that but this is the first pet I've ever had to put down by myself. I felt so guilty signing the form and watching them carry him off, even knowing I did the right thing. I have to bury him tomorrow and empty his cage. I don't know how I'm going to do it. People say he was just a mouse, but he was still a part of me and because he was so small, I could always bring him when I had to travel. He was always there and now all that's left is his untouched food in his little house.

Very sorry for your loss, putting a pet down is one of the hardest things...

You can't measure love by the size of the creature. All critters have an impact on our life, great or small. No mouse is just a mouse when someone loves him.

I'm so sorry to hear this... You have my deepest sympathies.
I'm sure your little mouse appreciates all you have done for him and knows how much you loved and cared for him. I hope with time you will start to feel better, the memory of the little fellow will always be close to your heart.

Rest in peace, little one.

How incredibly sad. I hope you are able to put your good memories ahead of the bad ones, and then your little mouse will bring a smile to your face, even though he's no longer with you in body.

People who do not understand the love you have for a pet, no matter whether it is a tiny mouse or a huge horse, are people who are to be pitied.

Thank you everyone. These posts made me cry all over again at work, but were so comforting. He is definitely loved and burying him will be hard. I'm not quite ready to put his cage away yet and I think that's for the best because my lovebird was quite infatuated with him and was pretty stressed he wasn't there this morning.
