Today I came home from work, and greeted my new Conure, and then my two Linnes, except one of them didnt come greet me.. I looked around in her cage, maybe she was playing, or eating....
Then i noticed something scary. Luna (the one who didnt greet me) was on the bars above her perch at the back of the cage. String wound around her perch, her foot, and her neck.
the string must have been pulled out of the cage cover i keep on the back of their cage (my room is drafty). i chose that cover because it was a smooth material. Luna had happened to find a seam and rip it apart today, and the loose threads then ran their course....
My eyes sting as i write this.
I happened while i was at work. My other linnie, Nala, has been her cage mate for a year now. they are both about a year old. she spent the day with her best friend lifeless in the back of her cage.
I feel disturbed and horrible and dont know how to feel better. I love my birds and would never have imagined this outcome in a million years.
I dont think i could have prevented it bc last i knew the sweater wasnt frayed, but i feell its my fault none the less.
My lesson is to always triple check everything.
that horrible image will not leave my head.
also, my boyfriend suggests i should get a new mate\friend for nala, is that a bad idea? I have removed the cover and will find something better....
Oh my god, what a terrible sight to come home to... Try not to blame yourself, this was a horrible accident, you couldn't predict Luna was going to shred the sweater and tangle herself on it. You have my deepest sympathies and I hope with time your mind will be more at ease and the pain you are feeling for Luna's departure will be replaced by the good memories of the times spent with her.
Be sure to give Nala some extra love and attention and if after a while you see she is still not quite herself and misses her friend then a new one will do her good.
Rest in peace, Luna. You were much loved and will be missed.
RIP sweet Tito (Summer 2008 - January 17th 2013).
You are missed and never will be forgotten.
I am so sorry you have had to go through this terrible accident, these things happen and we are not there at the time. Life is full of tragic moments but please try to find comfort in knowing you yourself will become a more vigilant and watchful owner. It wasn't your fault circumstances brought this to it's happening . Fly high and free sweet bird.
Thanks everyone. Its easier to feel better after a nights sleep, but waking up to a much quieter room is noticable. Im going to miss her for a very long time. She was not just a bird, i loved her very very much. No one, animal or otherwise deserves what my beautiful Luna went through.
Please everyone take my sadness as a lesson well learnt, and if you change nothing else, at least be sure to tell them (people, animal or otherwise) that you love them before you leave for the day.
Last i know of her, she was happily bickering with Nala over who got to eat more cucumber. Its a cute memory and im keeping it.
