Default I need help! :(

Today one of my parakeets died and I felt like here would be a pretty reliable place to ask for help. I was never really that close with either of them until recently but they still both refused to do anything with me (this has been going on for the past 3 years). I never realized until I got older (I'm 14 now) that socializing with them and letting them out of their cage was that important until recently, when it was already too late One of my parakeets was "mine" - me and my little brother picked one but he eventually gave his to me - and that was the one that died today. I have been feeding them and my parakeet never showed any obvious signs. I was playing a game on my computer when I heard a cry that sounded like 3 low pitched chirps so I went to check on the cage and he was dead :'( The other parakeet in the cage has been so quiet after we took the corpse of my parakeet out of the cage and buried him. Two days ago my mom washed their cage and she got my parakeet that died today a little wet, but I don't think that's what killed them. I will admit there were days where I neglected to feed them since I thought they still had seeds but I knew I had to feed them, which is why I feel so bad, but I've been feeding them daily for a while now. They would go at most 2 days before that without a fresh change of food. I feel so bad. I can't sleep at all and I don't know what to do. I've had them for 5-6 years and the other one is just sitting on her ladder. My mom and I don't think that we can handle any more pets so I can't buy another one. My question is what do I do with the one that's left? I think someone else took take much better care of her then I ever could and I want her to be with other birds but I don't know where to take her. There's that problem and the death of my parakeet which I still can't get over. I really appreciate any help!

Hi Zeref
Welcome to the forum, I'm sorry to hear that one of your birds has passed away, maybe you shouldn't feel to bad because some birds in captivity will only live for 4- 6 years, your profile doesn't state where you live but here in the UK there are always people wanting birds that maybe can't be looked after by their owners for whatever reason, search the internet in your area and I'm sure you'll find a new home for the remaining bird, maybe their is a pet rescue place near you that could rehome your bird for you. Good luck

If you are sure you need to find a new home for your budgie then male up some written information with your name and phone number an place the advert in pet shops or the local paper even. I am sure you must have a animal rescue where you are get in touch with them and ask how do you go about surrendering the budgie. Please take care of the bird till the new owner takes away. Food and fresh water and interaction now the budgie is on it's own it will be lonely.

Smile I Need

This is a tough life lesson. in addition to food and water quiet radio music is helpful as budgies feel safe when they hear chatter from their flock or other pleasing music or even budgie video on you tube. Explore how you feel about your budgie. Instead of being stuck on guilt, think how you might thank your budgies for being with you for so many years in spite of your lack of interest.
Grow to be a stronger person because of this experience. Best wishes, Jo Ann

Thanks for all the tips! I really appreciate it. The surviving one has been looking around the cage as if she's looking for the one that died and it's really killing me she refuses to let me get near her too. I'm trying to have her listen to other budgies and parakeets on youtube but she just continues to fly around the cage looking for the one that died About shelters in the area does anyone know of any shelters in the Baltimore Maryland area? I haven't found any.

I've just done a quick search online and found something that may be suitable, bird.rescueme.org/maryland.
Hopefully this will help you.

You can remain anonyous. Call an avian or any vet and ask for avian rescue or animal control or no kill shelter in Baltimore area or a Zoo may also be a source.

This may sound silly but the sound of running water is also soothing to a budgie.
May be take a shower and move her cage into the bath for a steam bath /sauna for your budgie. Best wishes, Jo Ann

P S Try Marylandpet.com/pet bird rescue. and click on far left column and click on bird rescue. This gives places all over the state besides just Baltimore. Best wishes, Jo Ann

You can go online to Petfinder.com and search for birds. You will find bird rescues in your area that will take him. Very sorry to hear about the loss of your other birds. XOXO
