As some of you know, yesterday I found this forum searching for information on budgies with aputated legs. My little Hermie had broken his leg and had an open fracture. I immediately took him to an ER vet where he stayed the night. The next day, I transferred him to a vet hospital where he was to have his leg amputated. Yesterday, around 4:10pm during surgery, my little guy's body was too weak for the anestesia and his heart gave out. They called me at work, told me that they were sorry for my loss, and I went to go and pick up his little body.
I will miss him with all of my heart, but take great comfort in knowing that I did the write thing for him, even if it didn't have the outcome I or anyone expected. People think I'm crazy paying a lot of money to try and help a little $15 bird; but they are the ones who are really crazy because a life, ANY LIFE, is not disposable and is worth something. I will never understand how people who say they can't afford vets can sit there and watch their animal suffer.
Hermie is now home squaking at me from the other side, and one day I'll see him again. But, until that time, I will surely miss my little blue bomb!
I'm so sorry for your loss. I know exactly how you must feel. Some people might think we spent far too much money on our Snowball and Blue too. Hospital and vet care is so very expensive. Neither made it back home.
Even though it was going to be a big bill, we couldn't think of any other alternative. If we can spend all kinds of money on ourselves what makes these little guys who depend on us less important. So you can believe me when I say I know how you feel.
I know I commented in your previous thread where you talked about bringing Hermie to the vet for surgery, but I wanted to reiterate how sorry I am for your loss. It is so devastating to leave the vet clinic without our little friends...just an empty cage.
