Default Before His Time

It is with great sadness that I make this post for my parakeet Eko. With further regret I aknowledge it is my fault he is no longer here.

After a long work night I came home and fell asleep before making sure my parakeets cage was closed. I usually keep it open for them to fly around while I am away. Tonight someone opened my bedroom door and forgot to close it, allowing my cat to come in. At 4:30 he nabbed poor Eko. I woke up immediatley and was able to retrieve him from the cat's mouth, but the damage had been done. Eko had a bad puncture wound in his lower chest.

I called the vet when the office opened but he said little could be done for me parakeet's internal injuries. When I returned hom from work tonight, Eko was barely able to stay on his perch. I held onto him, and about 15 minutes later he passed away in my hands.

I feel better that my two other parakeets Zipper and Molly nuzzled up next to him this morning and helped him straighten his feathers. It really spoke of how close to him they were.

I had all four of my parakeets for three years. These last two months my family has grown lax and left my bedroom open for the cat. In May he gave the same fatal wound to my keet Button.

I am not angry at the cat (not too angry anyways). It is in his nature to go after birds. Instead I blame myself for giving him the opportunity to hurt my friends. I wonder if I am worthy of keeping care of pets. Already I can tell my two remaining Keets are hurt emotionally. Their tall and large cage looks so empty and sad. I'm wondering if I should go and get them some new friends, or should I wait, or not get any at all? I am very confused.

R.I.P. little friends. I'm so sorry I let you down...

Hello! welcome we are glad you joined us! Its so sad that these circumstances brought you to your first post. I'm so sorry for your loss of Button and Eko!

I wouldn't get any more Budgies at this time until the problem with the cat and your family can be resolved. I would as I'm sure you would hate to see you lose more Budgies.

I hope you will vist the forums often. There is a wealth of information in the forums and a great community!

Sorry to hear about Eko. We don't have a cat, but the neighbours cat comes in our house if the back door is open, so we have to be really careful. Especially now that we have 2 budgies in the back room, and the cat has been in there a few times lately before we got them.

What happened sounds like a genuine accident, but i think you'll have to tighten up on your rules regarding door closing etc.

Sorry for your loss. RIP Eko.

Hi I am so sorry for your loss of Eko, My Sweets died night before last (she was so sweet, I would say 'give me a kiss sweets' and she would touch my lip bite me acoulpe times but thats ok) she was a wonderful lil budgie and I miss her, she got sick and I couldn't make her well, I held her for a long time that nite when I finally put her back in her cage left for a couple minutes came back to check on her and she was dead. I have two other budgies but as with children they are all different, I will miss my sweets as you will your Eko. I didn't know till after Sweets died just how much I did love that little budgie.. Your Friend vally(Pat)

So sorry to hear about Eko. RIP little one. You're right, it's not the cat's fault. It might be a good idea to sort about the issue of the family being lax about the cat around the birds before getting more.

I was very saddened to hear about Eko.
Zipper and Molly will go through a mourning period just like you.
We all share in your grief.

So sorry to hear that you lost your little friend.

I have an idea - I used to do this to keep the dogs out of a room. I put a hook and eye just above arm's reach of my kids on the outside of the door. When I left the room I locked it.

The room was off limits as well. It's not your fault, nor can you blame the cat. However - your family need to learn that the birds are yours and that your room is private.

Hopefully they have learned this lesson. Sounds like your budgies have a very kind and responsible owner.

RIP Eko
