Default I'm sorry little buddy.

I haven't had birds for very long, only about a year and some change. I lost my first parakeet to our cat today. I knew deep down it would happen eventually, we could only be too safe. I was getting over-confident with how well it had been going. They were for the most part always separated or supervised. I'm downstairs eating lunch, when I see the cat trot along with something in his mouth. Immediately I knew what had happened.

I'm sorry C. I take the harsh lesson you taught me to heart. You were my favorite, and will cherish our moments of bonding always.

First Image is the first picture i took of C the one who met an unfortunate end.

Second image is the first day I had all three together. Sky, C on the swing, and Cleto in the back.

Sorry for your loss. I will say this though, it is hard to reconcile your statements. If you knew deep down inside this would eventually happen why did you let the birds out of cage in the same room as the cat. I sure hope you don't allow this to happen to your other bird's. Please do not let them out without the cat being put away. Those little bird's are depending on your good judgement for their well being....

Sorry if I sound harsh, don't mean to. Welcome to talk budgies forums. Lot of good, informative reading in the stickies...

As I said, i was over-confident. Usually they are in their own room with the door shut if I am not around. The word I'm looking for escapes me at the moment. (no it's not "stupid") I do admit to it being my fault, there is no mistake in that. That is why I said I will take the lesson to heart, and should never assume with other pets around.

Thanks, man. I will look into that. I was just feeling terrible today and surfing the web looking for bird related things, and came across this forum.

Do not have a cat running loose around a small budgie. This will only happen again if you are not careful. I live near some woods, I have seen cats attack and kill birds many times. It is simply a nature habit of theirs to kill small things. Cats also torture mice. They sometimes bite their head off. I believe they also do it to birds. Have seen headless birds in very back of my yard, but have never actually seen a cat do it.But a neighbor tells me they do.

I'm sorry for your loss and for the fact that you had to learn this lesson at the expense of your gorgeous budgie. Sadly now you are fully aware of the consequences. You should never let a pet bird loose in the same room of a cat or dog. It only takes a split second, a moment where they give in to their natural instincts for something so tragic like that happen.
I gather you also know what your budgie's name means in Spanish... all I say is that he deserved a better name.

Rest in peace, little one.

Thanks guys.

I can't stress enough how torn I feel. I really do care a lot for these birds, they are the first pets I've had the pleasure of caring for that I feel attached to. And I feel like it is 100% my fault; I'm already replaying the day in my head wondering why I didn't close the door to our room on my way downstairs. I usually count heads to check they are all there. I don't know why I didn't in that particular moment.

The word I was looking for last night was hubris. I got too comfortable, and he paid the price.

I will take this lesson to heart forever, and apply it not only to the birds, but life as well.

And as far as the name goes, I can assure you I put a lot of thought into it and meant no ill thoughts to my little C.

I remember a time some years back that I unplugged the heater to my fish tank to stick my hands in risk free of electrocution for cleaning. On this particular day, when finished cleaning, I forgot to replug the heater back in. Of course it was winter, and the temperature in my basement was about ten degrees colder than I normally keep the tank at, and I didn't realize for several days my mistake. The colder water stressed my fish, which led to Ich, and unfortunately the loss of several of them. I felt horrible about it.

I thought about what I could do to ensure this never happened again. I now have all my tank's grounded with GFCI so I never have to shut anything off to stick my hands in. I was thinking about your situation. Maybe a door pump or spring, that would ensure door goes completely closed when people go in or out could save you any future grief. They are cheap and easy to install. Don't be too hard on yourself...
