Bye Bye Stormy
Yesterday was a sad day at my house.

Sparkle's partner in crime Stormy passed away.
I purchased both the boys together as they seemed bonded to each other at the store. They were like twins and did everything together at the same time.

If one got a bath the other did, one went to the seed bowl the other did, they would swing side by side even though they each had there own and of course were constant companions to one another.

At Christmas time I notice that Stormy had mites and I started treatment right away. About five days ago he started eating constantly, almost non stop for 6 days. I watched him for any signs of illness but we know that is not as easy as it sounds but he was singing, bathing, his poop was normal, drinking water and chatting with Sparkle. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary other than he was eating all the time.

Saturday and Sunday (morning) I was paying careful attention to them as it it brutally cold here in NJ. With the heat set at 75 the temp in my home was 47. We had very low temperatures and 60mph winds. So I made sure they were as warm as possible and checking on them often.

I was in another room and heard Sparkle screaming loudly, he was the louder of the two and was always chattering. But it dawned on me that the noise he was making sounded different. So I went to check out what was going on and Sparkle was "screaming" and racing back and forth on the perch. And sadly, Stormy was on the bottom of the cage and it was obvious that he had passed.

Needless to say Sparkle and I are very saddened and lonely. Sparkle keeps looking for his special friend and has been very quite.

Bye bye sweet Stormy. February 15 2015:budge:

I'm so sorry for the loss of your Stormy.

Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear this...:( You have my deepest sympathies.
It's never easy to cope with the loss of a beloved pet and on top of it all to see its mate so distressed about it.
I hope you and Sparkle will feel better soon, be sure to give him some extra tlc during this very challenging time.

Rest in peace, little Stormy. You were much loved and will be missed.

FaeryBee 02-16-2015 01:45 PM

I'm very sorry for your loss of little Stormy and I fully understand what you are going through with Sparkle.
My Sunny was the same way when he lost his best buddy, Shelby.
You may want to consider getting Sparkle a new friend. Since you will need to quarantine the new bird, it will be a few weeks before you will be able to introduce them. I know my Sunny was very depressed after Shelby passed and only perked up when my Sparky started spending all day each day with him.

Fly High and Free little Stormy -- Rest In Peace now sweet boy.

What a wonderful bond those two shared, it is a hard time for both of you at present, be there for Sparkle as often as possible.
As FaeryBee suggested perhaps another budgie will help ease the pain, you are not replacing Stormy as he will be with you forever in spirit. He is flying high and free with the flock above.

Sorry for your loss. it is amazing that they seem to know when something is wrong. They are very smart. I hope your little one will be ok.

I'm so sorry to hear about Stormy Sande :( There is no doubt he was well-cared for and loved not only in his last few days, but throughout his life. These little guys are so fragile that sometimes we can never pinpoint what happened.

Regardless, may he rest in peace and fly free over rainbow bridge

Thank you everyone for your kind words and thoughts.

Me and Sparkle are hanging in there though he's been very quite which is very unlike him.

I'm not sure about getting another Budgie right now but maybe in the future.

I have a question regarding Stormy's partner in crime.
Its been a few weeks since Stormy passed and Sparkle is not doing well.

Those two were more like twins and Sparkle is like a total different budgie.

He was the loud one, the one always flying around the cage and was trained to get on my hand (he preferred that inside of stepping up on finger), he sang for hours.

Now he sits on the far corner of the cage and only leaves the spot to eat which I am concerned about because I've actually only seen him in the bowl a dozen times.

He rarely sings and the budgie would stay on my hand so long my back hurt from leaning into the cage won't come near my hand. If I put my hand near him or attempt to have him step up he will take a quick peck which he never did before. He won't get up on the swing for a rub which he would do several times a day. The other day he did something I've never saw him do. I have a small bowl that I keep pieces of egg shells in. That was Stormy's favorite spot to land and rest. I never saw Sparkle go near that on the rare occasion he does leave his perch in the corner that is where he goes.

Could he be so heart broken from Stormy's death? As I stated in my original post I wasn't in the room when Stormy passed.

Anyone ever had one of their budgie be heart broken like this?

marya 03-05-2015 01:45 PM

ByeBye Stormy.
I f they were together from the start and very bonded as you said . He will probably be missing him a lot and still grieving for. Its only time that will help. And perhaps in the future as someone else said .you might get a little budgie friend for him. So sorry for you and and Sparkle. RIP Stormy.

dsavino 03-05-2015 02:55 PM

Sande, I'm so sorry to hear about Stormy's passing. My prayers are with you and little Sparkle and that your broken hearts would heal quickly. God bless you both.

PrincipePio 03-05-2015 03:12 PM

I'm really sorry to hear about Stormy and my thoughts are with you and Sparkle during this difficult time. Perhaps your bond with Sparkle will be strengthened through this grief and your fun memories will overshadow any sadness.

Frostie 03-05-2015 04:34 PM

R.I.P Stormy, fly high over rainbow bridge, hopefully Sparkle will be alright after losing his companion.

StarlingWings 03-05-2015 06:45 PM

Rest in peace and joy, little Stormy, and fly high. I'm so sorry for you and Sparkle's loss. You both must be devastated, and it seems like Sparkle has gotten into a depression from missing Stormy. I would give him time, and as long as he's still eating and drinking, he should be okay. Spend lots of time with him and let him know he is loved.

Poor little guy. This is a heartbreaking story.

Deepest condolences :(

SPBudgie 03-05-2015 07:21 PM

This is an incredibly heartbreaking situation. I have heard of quite a few budgies that have been similarly devastated by the loss of their constant companion. They are highly intelligent, sensitive, social creatures, and can be deeply affected.
As others have said, perhaps your extra, compassionate attention and affection can penetrate Sparkle's depression, and create a stronger bond between the 2 of you after awhile. Patience is the most needful quality to have with budgies, especially at a time like this. I pray that Sparkle will respond to your love and concern, and so heal from his gigantic loss; I pray that you will, too.
If, by chance, he Doesn't warm back up to you, you might really consider getting him another little budgie companion...

TheBoysMom 03-08-2015 01:36 PM

Thank you all for your kind words and advice.

Sadly Sparkle is still not dealing or accepting Stormy's passing.

It made me think about the married couple that if one spouse dies the other one passes not long after.

He is eating very little and still just on his perch in corner like he is being punish. Giving him tons of attention but as of now it doesn't seem to be doing much and he won't let me touch him or step up.
