I can't remember how old I was when I got Dathius, but I was probably around 10 or 11. I remember reading the parakeet care book I had gotten over and over, wanting to make sure I could care for him properly so he could live a wonderful and long life. On my birthday that year, we went to Petsmart to get the cage and toys and such. I was so excited to get everything set up, and I was even more eager to get my budgie. Eventually the day came that we went to the pet store and I fell in love with a beautiful blue and white male. We brought him home, and it was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
I don't remember the taming process at all, I pretty much just remember being close to him very quickly. One of his favorite things to do was nibble on books I was trying to read, and doing homework with him on my shoulder was nearly impossible. One moment that stands out to me the most is the time I had him out with me, and I managed to fall asleep on my parents' bed with Dathius on my finger. I'm not sure how long I was asleep, but when I woke up, Dathius was still sitting on my finger, waiting for me to wake up so we could play again.
Unfortunately, since I was so young and budgies are so good at hiding when they don't feel well, he didn't live much longer than a year with me. It's been a long time since I had him, and spending time with the new budgies I recently brought home has brought up so many memories of him. I don't have any pictures of him to share, but I still wanted to talk a bit about him.
I love you, Dathius, and someday I'll see you again.
Although budgies are such small and delicate birds the huge impact they have on our hearts is amazing, I am sure your sweet boy is flying high with our Angel Flock. Thankyou for sharing your lovely story.
Your tribute to Dathius is lovely.
I'm sure he loved every moment he had with you.
He's playing happily at the Rainbow Bridge with the Angel Budgies and telling them stories of his time on earth.
What a sad but lovely story about your beautiful budgie. Yes he is close to you always. You do not mention any other budgies - do you feel ready for another feathered friend it would be such a compliment to your beautiful budgie and I am sure it would re-evoke all the good times you had in the past. Take care and do let us know when you do
