My parakeet, Shadow, passed away on July 14, 2016. I am a composer, so I decided to write music to celebrate her life, rather than music to mourn her death. The piece I wrote is called Shadow: Celebration of a Life and is dedicated to everyone who has lost a beloved pet.
The music tells of Shadow's life from when she first entered the world until she settled into a happy life with us. You can hear the music and get more details at https://SoundCloud.com/freixas/shadow.
I am posting here for two reasons:
The members of this forum are most likely to appreciate the muisc.
Perhaps the music will help those of you have are dealing with the loss of a bird.
I really love that you shared your piece with us. I compose music as well as play both violin and cello, and it touched my heart in the deepest of ways to hear this piece (I'm listening to it as I write this!) for your beautiful little Shadow.
I can hear her right now. She's cocking her head at me from the top of her cage, now she's bobbing her head gleefully. She's chirping as she looks into the morning sun, and now she's ducking down to have a bite of millet.
I can see her life more clearly than I would have thought considering I've never met either of you in the least bit. It feels so personal that to be honest I'm crying--I can see her in my mind, and she is beautiful.
I can't imagine your loss of your precious little girl. She was so full of character and so full of energy and life that I know you still hurt inside to think of her.
Thank you for sharing her with us
and Princess Mallorn!
Thank you to Deb for her wonderful Faery magic
You have my sympathy in your loss of darling little Shadow.
Shadow sounds like a truly delightful little budgie and was obviously loved very much.
The music you've composed and dedicated to her is amazing.
Thank you so much for sharing it with us.
I love how Shadow is represented by the happy trills of the flute!
I agree with Star - hearing the music brings Shadow's life so much more into focus than I would ever have imagined.
If you decide, later on, to bring another budgie into your heart and home, I hope you will consider becoming an active member of the forum.
Please take the time to read through all of the How To Guides, the FAQs and the stickies located at the top of each section of the forum.
You'll find most of your basic questions about budgies and caring for them will have been answered after you've read through all of them.

StarlingWings and FairyBee: Thanks so much for your replies. I wrote the music and I've listened to it hundreds of times and I still get choked up sometimes when I hear it.
There are lots of people who will hear this music (I hope!) but I think people who are very familiar with parakeets may appreciate the piece more than others, which is why I made a special effort to find your forum and post here.
I still have Luke Skywalker, a male parakeet I got to keep Shadow company. He has been by himself for a few months and its interesting to see him adopt some of Shadow's behavior. He even flew to me while I was playing the piano once, climbed down my arm and hopped on the keyboard—Shadow would do that, but he never has!
He also likes to sit on my mouse hand as I work at the computer. Shadow did teach him that. When she was alive, I would have one on each hand, which slowed down my typing a bit. :-)
My wife thinks she may have found a buddy for Luke, so he may not be alone much longer.
Its great that you are getting Luke a new friend please quarantine him before introducing him to Luke. I love all music and I also play the keyboard and play out at functions to entertain people who love music.
I have played your music to my flock and both budgies and lovebirds have responded positively to it.
It's interesting you say this. Luke also seems to like it. Yesterday, my wife tried to get him to react to a parakeet on YouTube and Luke was ignoring it. Then she played my piece and he got very talky.
