It is with deep sadness that I now bid farewell to my little boy Oliver - my little Sweetpea
, which I nicknamed him after the budgie in The Secret Life of Pets.
He was found laying lifeless at the bottom of the cage when I came home from work Thursday afternoon for which I was quite stunned to see. He had been molting for nearly a month, but he's always been lively with no visible signs of any ailments except being more fatigued this past week than usual. I had noticed Thursday morning prior to leaving for work that he stood on a food tray for a lengthy period without eating with both eyes shut. His posture was upright as usual but I noticed that his upper torso did waver slightly back and forth like he was trying to maintain balance. I reached in the cage to touch him and he wasn't very responsive so I stayed home for a bit longer to observe him, and he eventually tucked his head to his backside to nap. I just assumed this as a sign of fatigue from molting. All the days prior to this, he seemed very normal so I then left for work without being too worried but having thoughts of his unsteady stance. I came home a bit early in the afternoon to see him laid still and face-up on the cage floor and my heart immediately sank.
Oliver was brought home on June 12 of this year and the happiness he gave me these past 5 months will forever be cherished. He was simply a cute and sweet little bird with a very pleasant temperament and a look that always bring smiles to those who behold him. This was compelling enough for me to bring him home despite a few minor flaws. He was quite smaller in size compared to my other budgies at only 36 grams at the time with less than perfect plumage, but he was still a real gem in my eyes. This is why I wanted to give him the best care and a home to flourish, and I was very pleased that he's gained another 6 grams since.
Unlike my dearly departed parrotlet Lily and budgie Princess who both faded right before eyes and in the cradle of my hands, Oliver was found on the cage floor with his body facing up evenly and peacefully in very dignified form. As I picked him up and held him in the cradle of my palm, half of me thought of my failure to fulfill my obligation to him, yet my other half felt that maybe his time has come and he's now truly resting in peace. Those of you familiar with my little Ollie, let us bid him remembrance and a final farewell and I thank you all.
First sight of Ollie (center) at the shop and about to be adopted to a bigger and nicer home with new friends
First day home and settling in comfortably on a fancy swing
Getting acquainted with whats to become his favorite toy. He and his GF Gisele eventually yanked the ball completely off the chain!
Dining with his lady friend
They've been bonding for the past few months. Notice on the photo that he's propped himself to stand taller with his chest more upright to impress the girl. She was actually bigger than he by about 10 grams at the time
With my other 3 JediBoys
