Today at 1:00 I was cleaning cages, I had a breeding pair downstairs on top of the TV stand. Tweety and Faith were parents to 3 eggs. They have had babies before but with different mates. Earlier today, i brought down my big play stand and cut Tweetys wing feathers so he couldn't fly. I pinned up the cats and dogs and i let him out on it while i ran on the treadmill. I even brought down his first son, Firecracker, so they could play while Faith was still in the nest box (able to fly).
Tweety has always been able to fly, he was my best bird, my very first bird overall. He started my sincere love for birds, which I have 21...20...now. He was so tame so I never had to worry about him not listening to me. He was the best flyer.
Well I went down there to clean and found no cage on top of the TV, and a water dish on the couch across the room. I walk around the chairs and see Faith on top of a cage all disassembled, and nest box unattached with her 3 eggs cracked on the carpet. I went running through the house looking for Tweety.
We only have 2 cats, and 2 dogs. The dogs have never hurt the birds, they usually play with weaning baby birds. The cats were never allowed in the room with the birds. The one cat is only about 2 years and the other is around 8 with an enlarged heart that was only suppose to live till he was 1.
I found Logan (the older cat) growling at the dogs in the front room. I went running in and saw green feathers and half a bird in his mouth. He ran to the dining room and got on a chair. I went to get him and Tweety fell off of the chair and I screamed and started crying. I chased Logan upstairs and finally got him, put him in the dog cage and went back down to rescue Faith.
I Went down and opened the door to the basement which blocked the back living room off, because Faith could fly. She flew from the TV to the window twice, I got her when she went back onto the window. I brought her upstairs and she is in her own cage with low perches and food/water. Hopefully she isn't hurt. There is a bare spot on her chest but i believe that is from her plucking for the nest. Other than that she seems fine.
I called my mom and she came home from work. We took care of Tweety, we will bury him tonight, next to his 2 babies he lost from his very first clutch.
Now as I type this, I am talking to Princess, his mate. She was my second bird and Tweety and her loved each other so much. I hope she will be ok. She has her son and daughter here with her. I feel so bad.
If only I didn't cut Tweety's wings he could have flew away and this would not have happened. Oh how bad I feel. I just hope it didn't hurt him. He had the best life. Sorry for such a long post.
Fly free now Tweety.
Rest in Peace My Love
You were meant to only fly...
