It has been a sad few weeks in my home. My budgie Rikku and I have been missing my husband who just left for basic training for the US Army. He has been gone 5 weeks. Rikku did not take well to this change of one of his parents not being at home. I noticed he was not eating as much and he didn't like spending as much time out of his cage. Before he was always on my shoulder.
I continued with our routine, cage and toy change on Wednesday, play time every day, and so on. I had gone to a friends house for the night to help her with the new baby so she could get some sleep. When I came home this morning I found Rikku chirping at the bottom of the cage. One of his flight feathers was stuck in a toy along with a claw. I took him out and gave him the once over and the bleeding had stopped. It looked (around the cage) like he had lost a lot from his toe and wing. All he would do is chirp. I couldn't get him to eat or drink. I held him for 2 hours till he passed. I have lost my son today. I gathered up all his favorite toys, a sprig of fresh millet, and put him to rest at the edge of the garden. I feel so alone now, with out him and my husband.
Saddened to hear Rikku had passed on. He sounded like a very special family member true to his happy disposition depicted in the picture shown. He will be missed by everyone here too. Take care, Rikku's mom.
RIP Rikku. Fly high and fly free to wherever you wish.
That is an awful loss. I am so sorry, especially since it happened while you were helping someone else out. What kind of toy caused the problem?

Cutie Pie, Olive, Ariel, Little One and Chiclet are children of Budgie and Oscar.
Budgie and Star left us in 2009. Pepper and Oscar left us this year, 2010. 2018 and all are gone. Ariel and Cutie Pie died this Feb and March. Both over 11 years old.
A good day is a day all your birds are happy and healthy.
As I told my son about his beloved Meep....your Rikku felt his job of protecting Mommy and Daddy is better done flying high from the skies above. Fly high Rikku, your Mommy misses and loves you. When ever you feel you are missing Rikku too much, listen for the birds chirping outside, its him letting you know he is still there with you.
