This tribute was written by a member on another forum and reprinted here with her permission. It is a touching memorial to an injured baby pigeon-Spunkie- that she rescued and even took an Avian Vet( which is sometimes hard to do, because many won't treat them and consider them vermin) In spite of her heroic efforts Spunkie crossed the Bridge, this memorial shows just how fast these little ones, of any species, can capture our hearts.
JUST SOME FEATHERS
Why do I sit so sad, and weep
Up all the night, forsaking sleep?
What makes me close my eyes to see
A mem'ry of feathers upon my knee?
Sleeping so peaceful within my lap
Enjoying each other as friends, we nap!
How could a pigeon, so small and frail
Soften me so that my toughness failed?
How could a show of love, in a peck
As you nestled your sweetness into my neck
Cause me to think how good it is
To share such a moment,
To feel, to live!
How could some feathers, a bill and wings
Tug at my heartstrings, silly wee thing!
Why did I tremble when first I could see
The darkness of Death would soon tear you from me?
Lost to the battle, it's curtain then fell
Wrapping you tight in it's great, fearsome swell
Seeing the life cloud and fade from your eyes
Banishing chances for hasty "good-byes".....
How could some feathers break so the heart
Pulling my orderly world, thus, apart!.....
