If happy little blue birds fly...

So it's been a week now and it's not getting any better...

I've been offline for a while. On TB as well as life. My little budgie Sticky passed away in my hands on the 3rd of November 2010. She was such a little angel, too young to fly.

Thought I was ready for hand rearing. I was on the internet every spare minute I could find doing research, watching videos. Thought I did everything by the book, but I obviously missed something, quite possibly missed a number of things.

I took her to a vet the first week I had her and she got a clean bill of health. To my disappointment I found out later that the doc. was not an avian vet- even though the practice refer to themselves as “…bird and animal hospital”. Avian vets are few and far between in South Africa, but I did locate one 100 km away, after this horrible experience.

Nothing compares to the short week and a half that I was lucky enough to have Sticky in my life. Few people will ever understand this connection that a person can have with a bird.
A bird? Imagine!

The hand rearing experience was wonderful we bonded on a level that I never knew existed. I applaud anyone that has been able to hand rear a bub. I don’t know if I will try it again soon. At least not after I have learned from an experienced breeder who hand rears babies out of necessity.

I would like to warn anyone thinking hand rearing any bird for the first time: Think twice. Get practical experience. It is such an exciting idea: having a bird that will think of me as its mommy! Let me tell you there is nothing worse than realizing you are the one responsible for the loss of a life. A life so short lived it never even had the chance to fulfill its main purpose:

to fly.

Beyond the rainbow
Why, oh why can't I?

Rest in Peace, sweet Sticky. She is flying free now, knowing that you loved her. Keep her memory close to your heart.
