Default 2 birds in 2 days...

I know the guilt is supposed to pass eventually...but it hurts all the same.
We left for ONE night. Had everybody filled to the brim with food and water, the house warm and toasty...
We never spend the night anywhere, the animals depend on us too much.
It was Thanksgiving evening and we had drank a bit too much and I just couldn't have driven home.
We got there the next morning and the house was frigid...
So was my Linnie, Sapphire. She'd passed sometime in the evening. My only assumption is that the house had gotten too cold.
That evening, Buttercup passed.
All the other birds are in great condition...I just...feel like a piece of my heart is missing. I cried for hours on end...2 of my babies taken in one day, all because I stayed the night somewhere and should have been there to make sure the heater was working properly.
We're going to invest in some other heating methods besides what we already have, but...well, the guilt will always stay with me, that I might, just might, could have been able to save my girls if I had been home.

Oh, Erin, so sorry to hear that. It's never easy losing pets, especially ones we're close to. I don't really know what to say. I'm glad you acted responsibly by not driving after drinking. Things could've been so much worse. Don't beat yourself up. Best to remember the good memories. I wish you well.

So many accidents and tragedies are near misses and if only, and so many don't happen because the timing was off. Certainly anyone who drives has those moments when something could have gone seriously wrong. Most of the time, we get the chance to learn from it and sometimes, unfortunately, the lesson is too late. I am so sorry you lost your birds in such a way, but there is no point in beating your self up over it. We can't always be there and sometimes things happen. By happenstance, my daughter discovered she had very low levels of carbon monoxide leakage, not enough to trip the detectors, but if she had birds they would have died. She gets to think of how lucky she was instead of mourning pets. You had one of those moments, but you had the pets. I feel for you and I know it hurts,,, my sincerest and deepest condolences.

I was so sad when I read of your loss Erin, and it's at times like these that I can't find the words to say and console.

Time is supposed the be great healer, and it will take time for the worst of the pain to go. In the meantime take comfort in knowing that you have many wonderful friends here on Talk Budgies who understand just what you're going through right now.
