Default Maya flew away

Hi everyone

I have been avoiding this issue for more then a month now, because I feel so bad about it. It is also the reason that I was absent from TB over December.

I was visiting my parents on the farm early in December. My mom and I were sitting on the porch chatting away while I was making toys for the budgies. We were deep in conversation when I opened the cage door to add a new toy. Maya came out and flew away. My mom and I both kept on telling ourselves that she will be okay as there are hundreds of Eucalyptus trees on the farm and that she will feel at home in them. My dad kept trying to make light of the situation in his own way, but got cut off by my mom and I every time he tried to make a joke.

I now have a better understanding why some people cut their budgies wings,it is really horrible loosing a bird this way. I will however not be able to do it to Mackie and Tiki, but boy I will be much more aware when they are outside.

Fly free little Maya.

Oh Nicolette, I'm so sorry to read that Maya flew away.

I can understand your heartache, but sometimes these things just happen, and I feel really sad for you right now.

You are right. This carelessness of mine is why I've been to embarrassed to post anything in more than a month. I really feel so bad about loosing her. It was time to come clean and deal with what people were going to say.

I don't want to clip my other birds at all, I could never take flight away from a bird, I just understand now why people do it in the first place.

As always Spiky thanks for your honesty.

Aww, I'm sorry. I hope she finds her way home to you. If not, well, being hard on yourself up will do no good. No need to be embarrassed to post here, other people can always learn from your situation. Besides, if anyone says anything bad to you, I'll beat em up.

Even that wouldn't help you. A clipped bird can fly away, too, if they get scared or if they get a gust of wind. At least a flighted bird can get down from trees or fly away from predators, clipped birds can't.
