Poor little Robbie had to be put to sleep today.
He had been sick since November, and since then we did Flagyl, then 4 weeks of Doxycycline injections, and we honestly thought he was finally on the mend. In fact, on Wednesday we were commenting that he seemed playful and happy. Thursday morning I woke to find a huge lump on Robbie's back and he was somewhat lethargic. Watched him all morning and by Thursday afternoon he couldn't walk.
Poor thing would hobble to his food and water and it broke my heart to watch. He kept climbing the rungs of the cage to sit on his perch. Took him to the vet today and she's pretty sure it was cancer (it was a hard lump under his skin), and had probably been cancer all along. She felt his stomach was probably full of cancer too and was pushing on his nerves, causing his legs to be paralyzed.
He was young, as he was probably 3-4 months old when we got him, and in the 11 months we've had him he'd been sick for 4 of those months. The vet told us we took very good care of him considering how sick he's been. The heated cage, vitamins, and meds kept him going much longer than normal.
So, it's really quiet here tonight and the kids are already asking if we could get another bird, preferably something larger like a cockatiel or something. I just want to find a reputable place in Ohio to buy a healthy bird. We've learned a bunch about birds in the process, and what the best foods and proper care mean to bird health, and also looking for a bird that has a decent temperament.
Thanks for your support these last couple of months.
