Default Fu Man

Fu Man passed on Saturday after only having him for a week. He was very sweet and I already had him on my hand inside the cage, I'm sure he would have been a great pet for years.

I was reading and found that after a few months after their first mault they lose the grey stripes on the top of their head so I guess he was pretty young. I always thought Kiwi was younger because she was small but now looking at Kiwi she already lost her stripes. She does not seem to have yet developed her iris though. Does she appear to be healthy (Thinking my previous concern about her foot does not seem to be a hindrance)?

She is not puffed up all the time, does not bob her tail, does not pant, but rarely chirps, seems very skiddish and does not move around the cage unless to go eat. She will eat millet out of my hand but is to affraid to come onto my finger. Also the size of her cere to her beak, is that a cause for concern? Just seems shes a bit skinny...

Awww, I'm really sorry about Fu Man. He was so young.

It is usually pretty hard to tell just by looking whether or not a budgie is skinny. Weighing them is often the best way to monitor their weight and find out what is normal for your particular budgie.

I'd say that because your little Fu Man passed away for unknown reasons, it would be a good idea to have Kiwi seen by an avian vet for a checkup to make sure she isn't hiding or carrying the illness that Fu Man might have had.

Budgie behaviour can be hard to decode as every budgie has a different personality; just like there are people who are chatterboxes and people who are very shy, budgies can show similar kinds of personality traits.

You mentioned that Kiwi doesn't chirp much and she is quite skittish. This may be normal for her. Has she always been this way? This kind of behaviour might be normal for one budgie, but not normal for another...

Oh, and for everyone's convenience, here is the link to your photo album:

Thanks, she is new as well, I have had her just over a week. The cere is the thing I am most concerned about, but looking through some photo posts on this site it seems some others have similar beaks. A post on another thread said it is because she is in breeding condition. Can anyone elaborate on this?

Ah yes, the brown crusty cere does indicate that she is in a breeding mode. It's not to say that it is necessary to breed a hen who is in breeding mode of course. All female budgies tend to go in and out of this condition throughout the year, and all it means is that if she were given the appropriate environment and partner, she would be much more likely to successfully mate and produce eggs, leading to offspring.

RIP, poor darling baby Fu Man.

His time with you was short, but sweet. I do think it's a good idea to take Kiwi to the vet, just to be safe. Good luck!
