Default Goodbye my sweet pidgey

This morning, i was late for work, so i hurried to get dressed and ready. The last thing i did was give the budgies their veggies, clean the cage, and uncover them. I went to see sweetpea and pidgey with their veggies, and uncover them, change their paper etc.
I looked in and they were both on the floor of the cage. Pidgey was standing still, fluffed up, eyes closed. Sweetpea looked ok, i think she was just concerned for pidgey (bless her little heart)
I called the vets for an emergency appointment, and got ready for a struggle to get pidgey in the travel cage. But she just stood there and let me pick her up - i knew it was bad then

I headed straight to the vet. I checked on her after 5 min, and she was standing with her leg out... then 10 min later, and she had passed away
I called the vets and changed the appointment to a necropsy and continued driving. I wanted to make sure sweetpea wasnt at risk too

A little while after i got home, i got a call from the vets, they had performed the autopsy already. Dr Oldfeild said basically she died of septicemia, due to a low immune system he said her lungs were healthy (at least the medicine cleared her respiratory infection up ), main organs healthy, but an inflamed bowel

He said he thinks its likely she has PBFD, which caused the low immune system. We will wait until we get her tests back in a few weeks (she was tested last week), which i really hope not because i dont want sweetpea to have got it too

He said a sudden death like this is not entirely unexpected, considering how she was in general poor health

Last night, when i did her medicine, she was fine, she was screetching and nipping at me as per usual. When i put them to bed, i noticed she was fluffed up. But i thought she was just getting comfy for the night that was the ONLY other warning sign i got, it just came on so suddenly

So, im picking her up this afternoon, and we will bury her. Its so sad, sweetpea keeps calling out - i think she thinks i might still have pidgey the poor mite will be on her own for a long time, another 20 days of medicine followed by another quarrantine period

Its just so hard, we had such dreams for pidgey. That her feathers would grow back in, and someday she would be able to fly, like she should by all rights, being a bird. And she would be so happy to play with sweetpea, lollie and lenny.
And even if she never learnt to fly, we would have her for company in the evenings, play with her in the lounge, make her her own little gym to play on. I suppose it was not to be

So, my sweet pidgey. Rest in peace little one. You may not have known it but we loved you very much my little girl xx

Oh, Erika! I am so sorry about Pidgey This deeply upsets me as well because I was looking foward to seeing pictures of Pidgey all better and flying around I can't even begin to imagine the pain you are in, but atleast you made the last part of her life special. Please give Sweetpea a little kiss for me and I am here if you need to talk RIP sweet little Pidgey

RIP Pidgey. I am so sorry for your loss as I was following your thread and expecting the two to make a full recovery. If it shocking for us I can only imagine how you are feeling. Fly Free Pidgey.

I wasn't expecting that.

You did an amazing job with Pidgey, Erika. Rest assured that her last days were spent in peace and comfort with a caring owner and a great budgie-pal. Here's hoping that Sweetpea will fight through for them both and will be with Lollie and Lenny soon.

I can't begin to imagine how you feel; even reading this has brought me to the verge of tears.

But Pidgey is finally flying again.

Oh Erika i am so so sorry you lost poor little Pidgey. We were all hoping she would just get better and be the gorgeous little girl we could all picture. We all know (as i'm sure Pidgey did) that you did everything possible to help her. I'm sure you will miss her terribly. Fly high and free over the Rainbow Bridge little one, and hugs to you Erika.

Despite how upset i am, i couldnt help but laugh... i went in to check on sweetpea before i left the house again, so see her on the floor OUTSIDE the cage..!!!
I Caught her and popped her back in. She had escaped from the bottom of the cage, there is a gap there which usually i wedge shut with a peg, but the peg had fallen off. Im going to have to think of a more permanent solution for the gap. Also, ill have to put more toys in for sweetpea, now she's on her own i expect she will get bored.

The other half isnt home yet... when he is, we will find a nice spot to bury pidgey xx

Thank you everyone for your kind words

Dearest Erika,

I know eventhough little Pidgey wasn't with you for too long, she has already ground you down.

when i read about your dreams, i was really sad that the reality came so harsh to you.
I was initially worry about her survival being the questions of feather issue lingering in my mind, but Dr Oldfeild's visit last Thurs has given me some hope.

so sad it is back to square one. septicemia is a systemic blood infection when a particular infection has come out from the infected organ. will they test on blood to find out what bacteria has caused this and which antibiotics will be suitable?

i hope Sweetpea is not affected. i really hope so.
