Unhappy Bye, Sorry and Rest in Peace

I have been doing tons of research on budgies now that i plan to get a new pair. I have not had birds for the better part of 10 or so years now... and I have come to realize i was horrible with my last pair of birds I am doing all the perp the right way this time but i cant help but think back to the first pair... my dad had found one bird and we went to a neighbour who was a 'breeder' he gave us a cage for the bird that i now realise was to small to even be a carrying cage and we got a second bird to keep his company. The cage was one the guy had made and i am sure it was zink coated. We only fed them seed and my parents (mainly my dad) would hardly let us take them out the cage... I knew nothing of cuttle bone or supplements and we never got toys... but i was a kid and figured the breeder and my parents knew best... they lived about 3 years and i was told they were old, that birds dont live past 5...
sigh
all in all i am not putting the blame on anyone but myself... I really wish i had done more for Chirp and Chirpette so i just wanted to post this to say sorry and rest in peace.

well its weird they both just died we found one in the cage then the other. they guy told us they were old.

I have been trying to pin point what it could have been, but i think it was a combo of everything we did wrong.

Krissy,

Please don't beat yourself up. Many of us didn't know the proper way to care for our budgies years ago. I'm sure you did the best you could based on the knowledge you had at the time.
Chirp and Chirpette are flying high and free now at the Rainbow Bridge and resting peacefully until you meet them again someday.

I'm so glad you are now researching everything before getting new budgies -- that shows a real level of responsibility and maturity!

I think the very best advice anyone can offer is for you to read through all the FAQs and the stickies located at the top of each section of the forum. You'll find most all of your basic questions are answered after you've read through all of them.

That's a very good and helpful post!

I agree, it's not your fault, you were young and uneducated. There is always a first for everyone. Even I sometimes go thinking that poor nutrition and such led to Drini passing. You have to experiment, but it's always good to get your noggin crammed up on the subject, so things like this are least likely to happen. I reread all my budgie, cockatiel, and parrot books over and over, so make sure I don't forget anything.

Once more, Rip Chirp and Chirpette! You will always be loved!

right? ever since i found this site i've been amazed at what i've learned. the people on here are amazing.

I'm sorry about your parakeets...the misconception about birds is ASTOUNDING. when i got my pair i encountered one person that asked why i would take them on a weekend to my parents place (umm...because they are my pets and are companion animals....) and one person that almost fell on the ground when i told her i was glad we lived so close to an avian vet because she had never even thought about taking her parakeets to the vet. They're animals! Why would you not get treatment for an ill animal!
