Unhappy Goodbye Layla

I have not been on here in a couple years, due to some problems going on. If I can get another parakeet I would love to continue to be on here.

I have had Layla, my green and yellow parakeet for ten years. She has always been a scared parakeet, she would get scared at anything. A year and a half ago my sister's parakeets died a natural death after living 8 1/2 years. I expected Layla to die at the same time from missing them but she pushed on and I did my best to keep her company. After they died she became more scared, she did not want to come out of her cage. I tried to work with her but it was bad for her health with all the stress it caused her. She had fun in her cage listening to music (favorite was Owl City), watching out the window, climbing her cage, talking, and playing with her mirror which she liked to pick up and drop back down on the bars so it would bang. She got so much joy out of picking up and dropping her mirror while listening to music. Friday morning I checked on her, took care of her, then later that evening I went shopping. When I got home she was laying on the bottom of the cage and could hardly breathe, she was fixing to die. She did not live much longer after I discovered her on the bottom of the cage. We assume she died from a heart attack or something since she was so old and seemed healthy that morning. I will miss you Layla!

I hope to get another parakeet soon since I miss her and want to continue to have parakeets.

I'm sorry about your little Layla, may she fly high and free and see you again on the rainbow bridge. You gave her a good, long life, any parakeet you get will be lucky to have you as it's owner.

Thank you so much, Dani!

I feel better that in the future I will know better about caring for them. I did not know much about parakeet when I got her, since I was only seven, so even though I did care for her well I would still so some stuff differently (like diet).

I've been changing my budgie's diet over ever since I joined here, they're fussy but they're learning. It's a really great forum and I'm glad I found it before I got my first budgie, I was really lucky.

Make sure to share pictures of your new bird when you get him or her.

I am so sorry! She sounded like such a trooper! At least you gave her a long life! Rip Layla!

I suggest if it is still possible to do a necropsy, incase a disease caused her death. And so you can try and prevent it next time. And just in case the disease that she may have had could be transmitted to humans and or to other birds. You don't want you or your new budgie getting sick!

Thank you, Rainey and Ujana!

Ujana, that is not possible anymore. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Dani, that is great! I like that I know so much more now before I get a new one. I will make sure I post pictures! Right now my parents are just trying to decide if I can get one right now (life is changing so they want to make sure, which is good).

Thank you, Erika! I did do what I could, even if it did not always feel like enough.

It drove my sisters crazy, but I always smiled when I heard her being loud because I knew she was happy. And it was just so cute.

Yes, I am very happy my parents make decisions like this carefully and don't just say yes. Thank you, if I can I know I will be driving people crazy by talking about my new budgie.

When we have company, my budgies get really happy, i have to move them to another room or outside (in nice weather) beacuse they get TOO loud it dosnt stop them chattering happily, just moves the noise a little further away
Lollie has a habit of banging the water bowl, naughty! she tips the bowl over and water goes everywhere... cheeky thing but same here, as long as i know they are happy, noise isnt an issue
