Shamrock was a normal dark green budgerigar (parakeet). She was hatched on March 2, 2011 in Michigan. She came to live with me on July 2, 2011. At the time she was a very sick bird. I knew she’d be a challenge,
When I saw her in the pet store, I could see she had a case of what was obviously Scaly Feet. I figured I had to buy her so I could try to help her. On her first visit to the vet it was obvious she was also suffering from a respiratory infection. We also discovered through testing that she suffered from in infestation of Giardia and Tritrichomonas. After multiple visits to the vet and continued treatment, we managed to get her healthy.
In the beginning, she would play on my hands and let me handle her. But I believe that was mainly due to her illness. After she got well, she never did want to play with me so much anymore. I think she just became better friends with her feathered friends.
Although she never become tame to the point that she would let me pick her up after that, like the other parakeets, she did tolerate me working on her cage without putting up any kind of fuss.
Shamrock was pretty mellow most of the time. She liked to just sit on the various perches and play with her toys. She loved music as much as me though and she liked listening to Radio Disney. She would perk up and sing (or chirp) along with it whenever was playing.
This morning (October 5) I found her on the bottom of the cage. That in itself was not so abnormal. They have all started playing on the bottom of the cage sometimes. But she was in the corner half up on the bars looking kind of tired like she couldn’t climb up. Over the next couple hours, she looked worse every time I checked on her. The vet opens at 11 AM on Saturday so I left a voicemail to set up an emergency appointment. I somehow knew that she was not going to make it though and at about 9:45, Shamrock gave up her fight.
I didn’t want to bury her in the yard and have some wild animal dig her up. So, I sent her off by fire about an hour ago. As I watched the smoke float into the air, I imagined her spirit flying into the sky where she will forever fly high and free.
RIP little Shamrock. I love you.

I am so sad for your little friend. You seem a very loving and concerned budgie owner. When budgies get sick there isnt really a lot you can do for them. I think your idea of sending her off by fire was lovely, im sure she will appreciate it from heaven.
I am so sorry to hear about dear sweet Shamrock . She looks such a little sweetheart. And what a lovely story to read, she had a lovely life with you, and you were so kind to rescue her from the petshop even though she wasn't well.
RIP Shamrock you were much loved and will be missed.

Oh Will my heart goes out to you. Shamrock was special little gift and I know you gave her a very happy life.
I understand your not wanting to bury her. Her little spirit is free and I know Shamrock is looking down at you and letting you know that she's okay and wishing you weren't so sad. You have beautiful memories.
Fly high and free little Shamrock. You will be missed.
