Lisabon will become famous soon enough
Default :( big bird

I had 3 birds in a cage, two of them mated and the mother layed eggs. One egg hatched 3 days ago and I came home tonight to find the mother (im guessing) killed big bird. I feel so upset because its my duty to protect my birds and make sure nothing bad happens to them and he was attacked to death.
It was a sudden turn, usually they get along fine, big bird and ike the father had a really close relationship and they would take in turns at guarding the nest. I knew the mother was getting a little protective but I was keeping an eye on them i regret not taking him out of the cage Im such a bad budgie owner.

RIP big bird I am sorry

Your not a bad owner, you just didn't realize the risk, my hen almost killed her mate, but I was lucky enough to be sitting there when it happened and rescued him. I got bit quite bad while grabbing them and he was bit to the bone in his wing.. As nesty hen can be a very agressive bird! Sorry you lost him... RIP Big Bird.

So sorry to hear about the loss of Big Bird. It's very sad what happened, but bird ownership is a learning process. Your intentions were good

I'm so sorry. We make the best decisions
we can at the time. If you haven't encountered
a fierce mother hen before, you didn't know, and
it sounds like she gave you no sign she was about
to become a momzilla. Next time you'll have the
info you need to prevent anything like this happening
again. It's just sad that Big Bird was lost.

It's a very sad event - and am sorry you experienced that. I am in the same boat - before our pair had Terra, they had another budgie baby which I WAS going to take but left for a couple more days (hand feeding is not the easiest thing to do) and I don't know whether the mum or the dad did it, but I came out and found the baby had been severely attacked and mutilated, to death. I felt so bad - but I really did not know that budgies can and will do that.

You did not know either - if you had, you would have removed the baby so it didn't happen. So no, you are NOT a bad budgie owner. Sometimes, stuff just happens.

This was, indeed, a terrible chain of events - what a shock to find him...My heart goes out to you.
I do not believe you are a bad budgie owner - No one wants to believe something like this could Really happen; now you know to act on your first protective instinct. Sometimes our lessons just do come at a great price...So sorry for your loss

I'm so sorry about your loss of Big Bird.
Please don't blame yourself -- you didn't know that the hen would become so aggressive.

Big Bird is now at the Rainbow Bridge and you'll see him again someday.
