Default So Proud of Sunshine - What do think of his genes/him

Hi Everyone,

It's been a while (as always TMWTLP: "Too much work & Too Little Play"..!) since being "active" on TB...

...but glad to see old friends / contacts are still around...

# Gene question - What genes do Sunshine (see below) carry?
Having started with Show Budgy breeding, and being fortunate to buy over a "whole stud" from a fellow breeder...I'm so proud of my first BOS (Best on Show) award (only in the "novice" class that is)...not that it's about winning, rather partaking in this beautiful hobby of ours, meeting new friends with the same adoration for these little fluffy creatures, learning and sharing the joys of breeding (and sometimes winning)...

So here's the proud winner - SUNSHINE !!

Enjoy your birds & stay well for now,
ICIT-greetings
JacodK

Well, I'm impressed! He is indeed an
impressive and handsome bird. In
coloring, I can say he looks very much
like my budgie Dandelion...but sadly
for me that's pretty much where the
similarity ends

Congratulations on your success, and I
hope we can see more of your lovely birds

Thx to all,

Very proud of him, especially since he's not always in such "good condition" - a bit too "rough feathers" that doesn't always "appear neat"...

Yes, a Light-Green Spangle Opaline he is....

Just interesting that his dad was the visual Opaline in this case, a gene that is sex-linked and (in his case, a cock baby) must have come from his mother...which is a Grey-Green hen!?...(note: breeding cage setup, so mom and dad is known with certainty!)

Can the gene experts confirm?:
- whether this Opaline can be carried in "split" form by his mother?; and
- whether the "white cheek patches" are typical of / normal for a Spangle?

thx to all

Stay well,
jacodk

No females can NOT be split for Opaline (or TCB, Slate, INO or Cinnamon) because these genes are carried on the Z chromosome, and they only have one (ZW), whereas males have two (ZZ). Because all sex-linked genes are recessive, whatever gene is on the male's first Z chromosome will dominate the sex-linked gene and make it a split, unless the first Z also carries the same sex-linked gene. Females only need one sex-linked gene to show it because the W chromosome does not carry any other mutation genes. I hope that makes sense.

Thanks Alexis - for the clarification!

It sure makes sense, as explained - and I thought this was the case with the Opaline (& other sex-linked) gene(s)...now I'm again reminded of how it work, so thx.

However this would mean that Sunshine may not actually carry the Opline gene visually - given the dad/mom -pairing noted above -correct...?

Would his markings not be a bit of/that of "opalescence"? - rather than "true-Opaline", given the wing markings are so "faint"...as the dad/mom pairing is very certain?

Thanks again for advice!
