Anthracties are a very new and very rare mutation, first produced in Germany in 1998. A single Anthracite factor acts much like a dark factor, for example a Sky Blue single factor Anthracite would look like a Coblat Blue, with black cheek patches, but a double factor Anthracite is black or very very dark grey with black cheek patches. In green birds, a Light Green single factor Anthracite would look a little darker than a Dark Green, and A Light Green double factor Anthracite would look a little Darker than an Olive Green.
In the 1930s, a mutation called the English Grey appeared, in England, but was thought to be lost shortly after, however it has been determined that the English Grey and Anthracite mutations are the same.

No anthractie budgies in New Zealand yet.
They are properly confined to Germany.

No black & red & orange budgies existed yet.

Smile Black budgies

There are several ABS/ BAA English breeders across the U S that are working with the Anthracite. It is hard to get them unless you are a breeder and even then they are pricey. I love the single factor violet Anthracite. Truly amazing!!
Breeders trade rare mutations to get The Anthracite say for an Easly Clearbody or a good fallow etc. My first DEC came as a gift from Gordon Davis, but not before, after having expressed an interest, he quized me on intent and back ground in science and genetics and thru the years he drummed into me the proper way to ID a yellow face II DEC. Ultimately this produced Jack Frost, a cobalt/violet Frosted Dutch Pied. there were several people who wanted the DEC's Gorden gave me. I hope I have pleased him in the way I worked the DEC breeding program. I am grateful Gorden took a chance with a nobody novice.

Every time I look at Jack Frost and his offspring I think fondly of Gorden and his wife Teddy. So if you are interested in the Rare mutations become a mentee of a Rare English breeder and get to know as many breeders as you can so that they can check out your ethics and you to could receive such a blessing, even if you do not have a lot of money!!!

Blessings, Jo Ann
