Ok i need help
I have 2 chicks. 1 born thanksgiving night and the other born decmber 5th.

now my question is, how early can tell a mutation? Chick #1 (pic posted), i took it out of the box today and noticed that its feathers instead of being black theyre like a walnut brown color. and chick #2 is starting to look the same. could they be cinnamon? Dad is a sf cobalt (no known mutations) and mom is a yf1 sf cobalt (no known mutations). chick #1 is a defenite yf and #2 is also looking to be a yf as well.

Chick #2.

Guera-dakota89 12-27-2013 03:05 PM This is mom and dad. if somebody could tell me their exact colors that would be great. Please correct me if im wrong but, i think mom is a yellowface type 1 single factor cobalt. And dad is just a single factor cobalt.

Sorry, it seems like you pictures aren't showing up. If you are using photobucket, you can copy the IMG line of text to share photos. :)

HC, I've tried a million ways to get them to show but nothing is working. You can see the pictures in my album. Their the pictures 1's with the writing on them. I would really appreciate it if you or somebody could tell me what mutations and colors they all have. These guys are my first chicks.

Wow, they are all super cute! It's a little hard to tell, but my best guess would be that Chick #1 is a white base bird, opaline, possibly dilute and maybe grey wing or cinnamon? I'm not 100% positive though! Chick #2 looks to me to be some sort of pied - if there is spots of color on the chest, it is likely a dominant pied. If the lower abdomen is a different color, it is likely a recessive pied. I had some trouble seeing what color this chick was on my computer. Is it yellow?

Depending on which parent is opaline, it can tell you what the gender of chick #1 is. Opaline is a sex-linked gene, so if the father is opaline, the daughters will be opaline. If the mother is opaline, the sons will be opaline. Unless both parents are opaline, or split to it, this should tell you the gender of chick #1. :)

I was able to find your picture of mom and dad. Mom looks like a Yellowface type 1 opaline. This should mean that chick #1 is a male.

Dad appears to be a normal cobalt blue, meaning that he carries a dark factor. It looks like mom may be a cobalt too, but she also looks greyish, so an expert would be able to tell you for sure. She doesn't look sky blue to me, so I would venture to guess that she probably has a dark, grey, or violet factor. If she does carry a dark factor too, you could have some mauve blue chicks!

Since both parents are white based (blue) birds, the chicks will be blue too, since it is a recessive trait. :)

Also, since nether parent is pied, they must both be split for recessive pied. Chick #2 should be a female recessive pied.

I believe cinnamon is a dominant gene, so if the parent birds were split for it, it is possible that your babies are cinnamons.

HC, u rock!!!! Thank you. You just put the biggest smile on my face in long time. I knew automatically what dad was but could never quite put my finger on mom except for the yellowface and cobalt. I looked @ chick #2 chest yesterday it kind of looks like a sky blue, but we'll have to wait to be sure. As for #1 being clearwing I was actually thinking more on cinnamon side. Cuz if you get him under the right amount of light he still has a chestnut brown color. #2, I was also leaning towards pied and feathers are just a tad bit darker then #1.
