Default My Quest for a Rainbow budgie

So, most of you already know that I have a beautiful "almost" rainbow cock, named Tango.

I just need to breed out the Spangle, and I'll have a rainbow

I was just at the pet store checking things out, and they have a Blue Gryewing, and a Green Clearwing. It was hard to tell, but I'm sure both of them were female.

So, which one should I get? (Or get both and call it a day? )

Hello, I thought rainbow is mix of Golden face, Opaline and Clearwing, but I haven’t heard about mixing Spangles into this mutation, or it’s just a typo? LOL
Anyway, personally, I would go with Green Clearwing or even both
Good luck!

Smile a Rainbow

There are 4 compound factors The bird must also be a blue series as well as the yellow face, clear wing and opaline. no green bird in a Rainbow .
Check with Lindsey to see what possible combos might give you a Rainbow
You may need one or two generations. Then it is still a guess because your percentage is based on 100 which is nearly impossible to get a perfect yield.
I would contact Dan Scholtes in Iowa. you can find his contact info in the Listings on BAA web site. He is a long time champion breeder that produces rainbows from English show budgies. There are always hidden mutations in the heritage that can effect the result.

Best wishes, Jo Ann

she meant she's trying to get rid of the spangle lol

definitely get both, you need the clearwing for a rainbow, can't do it with just the greywing but you need a second pair that is 1 part greywing, clearwing or dilute or you won't be able to get the second generation going in the right direction. Can't get a rainbow first try with this guy unless he's split for clearwing or dilute which is very unlikely

Hope you get them! Ultimately you're going to need the right 2nd male too. Blue YF II opaline would be fantastic but even just a blue opaline would be a good start.

I have some Rainbows and some other similar to Rainbows.
You have a Goldenface, Opaline, Clearwing, Spangle (sf)
You can produce 50% babies to be Rainbows and the other 50% to be the same as the father.
All you have to do is find another GOLDENFACE (try not to find a Yellowface that is less bright yellow) Opaline (no lines on the back and bodycolour appears in the wing feathers) and also you need it to be CLEARWING (this will be a bit difficult to find).

-If you are having problems finding a Goldenface you can use a Yellowface, as the Goldenface gene is dominant over the Yellowface. Have in mind babies will also have the Yellowface gene but will appear Goldenface.

-If you are having problems finding a Clearwing you can find a Dilute, as the Clearwing will be dominant over the Dilute gene. Do not use a Greywing. You could use a FBC Greywing. Have in mind Clearwings have vibrant blue bodies.

The first photo i attached is a Dilute and the second photo a Clearwing.

Please note you have to be really carefull not to breed it with another Spangle.

I didn't realize Tango was a clearwing, I just thought he was a regular opaline spangle. Is it normal for spangled clearwings to have such dark markings on their wings? How can you tell it's a clearwing if the wings aren't completely clear? I have a really hard time figuring out combined mutations, so any info you can give would be much appreciated

Sorry you are correct i forgot he had black markings. No, he is not a Clearwing. ...Unless if by any change one of his parrents was a Clearwing and he has those genes as SPLIT. But you have to identify the parents to know this.

Anyway, bad news PuckieBear. In other words you have to find him exactly a female Goldenface, Opaline, Clearwing (a.k.a. Rainbow)

And they will produce...
Males:
50% Goldenface Opaline (SPLIT to Clearwing)
50% Goldenface Opaline Spangle(sf) (SPLIT to Clearwing)
Females:
50% Goldenface Opaline (SPLIT to Clearwing)
50% Goldenface Opaline Spangle(sf) (SPLIT to Clearwing)

...Later on you can leave the NON-SPANGLE children to inbreed (which ISN'T suggested for many reasons) to produce 25% of the grandchildren to be Goldenface Opaline Clearwing (Rainbow) ...OR... even better choise, you can place one of those babies and buy a Goldenface Opaline Clearwing OR a Goldenface Opaline Dilute. This way you will have 50% of the babies Goldenface Opaline Clearwings
