Default What colour is this? Goldenface what...

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what this mutation is. The guy I bought him from said "Goldenface Dark Green". They weren't his birds, but he was selling them for a friend at a sale, so I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't know the exact mutation/background either. I don't doubt the goldenface, because his chest has a shade of yellow mixed with the green, but I was wondering if he was a blue bird beneath the green (as a result of the goldenface)?

I think this because he has a blue tinge around his bum and, as you can see, on his rump (between the wings). I tried googling images, and found some which looked similar saying "Skyblue Goldenface SF". Not sure.

Thanks

This shows his chest a little better.

Looks like a dark green normal to me, could be split blue because of the blue showing beneath the feathers.

Single factor goldenfaces can be very tricky to identify after their first molt with such a deep yellow washing over them, and they do tend to look almost like green based birds

If I had to guess though I would say you have a violet green male there though rather than goldenface. The blue tint around his belly/vent is a very common characteristic of violet greens: Violet Green Budgies - ************* Cute Little Birdies Aviary

It is hard to tell what his true color is in these photos as the lighting makes him look very different in them... Do you have any more that were taken at the same time with no flash?

he appears to be dark green violet or olive green violet. He's handsome! I love his throat spots.

Now violet green has been brought up, I agree; the two violet greens that I bred look just like him EXCEPT the yellow suffusion that he has.

I don't have more photos from that day, but I took some more today. He is in a breeding cage at the moment.

You can see in these photos that his chest has a fair bit of yellow, so maybe there is some kind of goldenface in there too?

None of my photos have been taken using flash - spoils the colours

I also included a picture showing the blueish under his tail (which is also seen on his lower belly in other pics).

I think goldenface is only a blue series mutation.

Thanks Susan - I have been (for a while) trying to figure out whether goldenface was possible in greens, but I can never interpret the info properly - and then with what this man said when I bought him, had me hung up on maybe it could be. But thanks for clarifying that part. I wonder why so yellow then

The problem is.. a Goldenface can look like a green, even though it isn't a green. Best way to find out which it is, is to breed it. Then you'll be able to tell if the babies are yellow based or White based with Goldenface. Then you know what he is.
