Default A Few Questions About Budgie's Mutation

Hello,

I have what I think is a normal cobalt blue female budgie, but I have a few questions about her coloring. She has a ring of a more violet color that goes around her neck and up the back of her head and a band of a slightly lighter blue across her chest (It's more obvious in real life). Does this just sometimes happen or is it something to be concerned about? Is there a name for it? Also, am I right about my guess that she is a normal cobalt blue?

These are the best pictures of her that I could get because I was having trouble getting her to stay still and she is less afraid of my phone than a camera. I hope that the lighter color is clear enough. She has always had this but it's become more apparent as she's gotten older and with a food switch.

The lighter color is not from a flash, these were all taken in natural lighting.

She appears to be an Opaline violet cobalt (possibly double factor violet?).

Not sure what's causing that lighter coloration on her chest though. Has she gone through a molt recently? I remember I once had a budgie that had a oddly colored patch on his chest. Turns out it was just some older, dull feathers that had yet to molt.

I had one molt a couple moths ago and my young male seems to be starting to molt because his flight feathers are starting to grow back but I think she may have molted with the other one a couple months ago because of the feathers I still keep finding with the vacuum. Could she molt again if the younger one is? It's odd because the lighter patch is more of a blue green color. This picture is blurry but it shows the color well.

Here is one of the color stripe on her neck. Again, sorry it's blurry. I can try again tomorrow if it's sunny enough. Could this be a case of the pigments just got a bit wonky during development?

She could possibly start molting again? Budgies tend to have small molts throughout the year. Here's a pic of my guy with the odd patch on his chest/belly. (RIP)

The stripe of color around the neck is caused by Opaline. The Opaline gene causes body color to bleed out into the back of the neck, shoulders and wings. Normally the wings and shoulder area between the wings would be white.

The lack of white in the shoulder area is why I thought normal but I guess that just means she's poorly marked? She hasn't been acting abnormally or itchy and she's not loosing any feathers. I guess I will just have to keep an eye on it. She's always had a lighter patch on her chest (we got her late 2013 I think) but it became more noticeable.

Not poorly marked, just a beautiful blue series opaline!

I'm sure some more experienced member will be along to say what could have caused the lighter patch of blue. ^^ I'm sure it's nothing of concern though.

Oh my gosh - your hens are stunning!

I think the first one is sky blue violet opaline and the second one is cobalt violet opaline.

Thank you but these are all pictures of the same hen! She has parts on her that appear more sky blue like the band across her chest and a patch near her tail feathers but the rest of her is cobalt.

Here are two pictures from when we first got her. If you look near her tail feathers, you can see the blue and when you look at the reflection in the mirror, you can kind of see the band on her chest. These are the best pictures I have from when she was younger. As you can see, she still has the light blue patches... Does anyone know what it causing it?
