Default ... He might have been a goldenface all along

Yeah yeah, I'm terrible with mutations, but looking through some old photos had me wondering. Melvin has always had blue feathers on his rump and belly.. Many of the feathers are divided into two; one part is blue, one part is green. i haven't noticed lately because it is so dark in the winter, so I'll post some old baby photos. Has he been a blue based one this whole time?? That sneaky little boy!!

All of the photos are taken within a week since he arrived, so he is in his tiny taming cage, with exception from the two where he is in a white cage. Those are from two weeks after he arrived. Long story

It's hard to see on this photo, but he has blue feathers on his belly

Here there is blue everywhere. It really shows in direct sunlight!

Visible on his belly and rump

How he normally looks in bad, indoor lightning. You can still see his blue rump, but he looks like a normal green one.

I'm so confused right now

EDIT: plus, the blue is much harder to spot now that he is all grown up, and I don't think it's just because of the average lightning indoors

Although it is hard to tell which photo is the most accurate colourwise, I would still say he is a green. The yellow seems too regular right through the whole body to be a blue bird. Sometimes Olives have quite patchy areas of blue on them and he does look Olive in some of the shots.

The one with the most blue was the one most accurate before his first molt, now he only has a visibly blue rump and some feathers on his chest. The camera doesn't pick it up. He looks olive in some photos, but he is light green

Edit: all of his chest feathers where divided in two colours, so it was seemingly even, but it is only completely visible on one side at the time

He might be just a violet green, that can cause some blue/violet under the green? He still looks more true green than goldenface II to me, so since I see what you mean about the blue it's possible he was a violet green. He's a gorgeous boy

Well ,I will say he was one cute baby budgie, and has grown into a fine specimen of a budgie. He would certainly be welcome her in Australia with me and my budgies LOL.

This is a terrible development...I can understand if you want to say, rehome him to me, and move on....

I can't help with the mutation question's, hopefully one of our real mutation expert's can give you some insight...makes him even more handsome.....

I agree with Cathy and Randy -- no matter what Melvin's mutation is, he is adorable and there are several of us who would be more than willing to take him off your hands.

Merlin is adorable indeed. I'll let you know if the adorableness becomes too much for me to handle, I'll keep you on speed dial
