Default Mutation...

I've been reading all the posts about mutations, and it would be really cool to also know what Jakob is. When I was a young kid and we picked up my first budgie, it was a choice between blue or green, and I remember my grandmother eventually getting one that was all yellow.

Jakob was given to me as a present after my previous budgie passed away much too soon. It was no a surprise, but a friend picked the budgie and brought it home. The text I received was "it's a yellow budgie with black spots" You can possible imagine what I thought the bird looked like - I consider Jakob more green than yellow!

So what's the more accurate way of describing her?

It's hard to ever see in pictures, but she's got a few very dark wing feathers. She hasn't lost any of them yet, so I don't have any pictures. Her longest tail feathers (she's got two) are yellow.

Thanks in advance for any help!

I think your Jakob is a beautiful light green opaline clearflight pied budgie.

Thank you, Aluz. What do the various parts of that mean? I take it the "light green" is due to her main colour. What does the "opaline clearflight pied" refer to?

The opaline trait has to do with her black markings. You can see that by looking at the barring on her head/neck/face area which has more of a thinned out pattern. The markings on the wings and upper back area are also reversed when compared to a budgie with normal markings and there is also the presence of body colour, in your Jakob's case, she has green feathers on her upper back area.

If you take a look at the back of her head, you will probably notice a solid yellow (with no barring) pied patch. Her wings don't have the black markings all the way, making her a clearflight pied.

Here is a picture of my Mona (bird on the right) just to give you a better idea on the differences on the barring pattern and normal wing colour and overall body markings. Mona is a cobalt blue normal budgie.
