Default What am I missing?

Hello all!

I was positive that I had a Yellow Face II or Golden Face hen (I'm still not sure how to tell them apart) and a DF Dominant Pied cock.

However, they've had three chicks and two are normals!! The other is a SF Dom Pied YFII or GF.

What am I missing?? The cock doesn't have any iris rings - that's the only clue I have...

The cock looks like he is Recessive Pied also, so a combination of SF Dom Pied and Recessive Pied would be my guess. That would mean you could get some non-pieds and some Dominant Pieds. All chicks would be split for Recessive Pied so you may see a pied spot on their heads.

That would be my guess.

Female is yellow face not golden face

Male is dominant pied and could be split to recessive pied

Black eyes without iris ring could be because

1. Sometimes iris ring appears very late
2. Black eyes without iris ring is also a trait of being split to recessive pied

Once I had a dominant pied hen her one eye was black without iris ring she was split to recessive pied

yeah, I think he must be split for recessive because he had some normal chicks.

thank you!

I agree that dad is either recessive pied or combo recessive and dom pied. Recessive pieds (and I guess maybe splits, as a previous poster stated?) have black irises. So as long as mom isn't split for recessive pied and dad is indeed a combo pied, then your chicks would have a 50% chance of being dom pied. If I understand all that correctly.

Also, it looks like dad's cere is a dark pink color which I think makes it certain he's recessive pied (although could still be a combo with dominant pied). Is it possible for a dominant pied male to have a cere without any blue on it?

I am speaking from knowledge I gleaned while looking up mutations to figure out what my female budgie may be. I'm fairly certain she's a combo pied due to her almost complete lack of body color and that one of her eyes is black while the other is dark grey. The only way to see that is by shining a light directly into each eye, otherwise they both look black as opposed to my two males who both have normal white irises.

I thought he looked more like a combination pied that just a sf Dominant Pied due to the large areas of white and pattern of markings. He looks like either a df Dom Pied or a combo pied to me, but as he has some normal chicks he is very unlikely to be a df dom pied.

He could be a sf dom pied split for recessive pied but i would expect him to have more body colour and markings like his sf dom pied chicks if that was the case.

His cere has a blue splotch in the middle.

My first thought when you mentioned he is lacking iris rings is that he is a combo pied. (he must be sf dom pied and rec pied)

Mom Sf dom pied.

from two sf dom pied you can get 25% normals.
