Not all English budgies have the same look
I'm pretty new to seeing the English type. Through seeing lots of them in pictures, and a few in person at the bird store, it's evident that not all of the ones called "English Budgies" have the same type of look...
Some have very high domed heads, while others have significantly less 'bouffant' feathers on the head. Some also seem to have very long feathers on the head and beard area, while others have 'normal' length feathers.
Why? Is it just a matter of different bloodlines? Are these different types legitimately bred for these characteristics? Is a certain 'look' more desired as a show bird? Just wondering :).
Something a little funny... The first time I ever saw the English type in person was at a bird store. The same store Mink was from. These particular individuals were SO gigantic, and I thought it was the way they were supposed to look haha. These were noticeably much bigger than Mink and her brother!
You will notice many bold and beautiful EB on this forum from different members that have such diverse and unique looks that are just enchanting to behold, and this is indeed influenced by different bloodlines. You should definitely seek more info from the threads of our Admin Lindsey (CuteLittleBirdies), who is a breeder of the finest EB and unquestionably leading authority with a wealth of experience and knowledge.:)

There are definitely particular qualities that are sought after in birds that are bred for "show" although truly ethical breeders breed for BOTH temperament and physical characteristics rather than just physical attributes.
The American Budgerigar Society
English is the name often given to budgies bred for showing. They are not a separate breed and so are only different due to the selection of the breeders as they bred for a certain shape, size etc. The top show breeders often have a specific look that they have bred into all their birds and you can see that a bird was bred from their line by these traits.
Many times the birds you see called English budgies are a cross between birds bred for showing and birds bred for pets. They will be not as 'fluffy' or as big usually. There is no actual definition for an English budgie so people can choose to use the label or not.
Thanks for the explanations :).
I LOVE Lindsey's website, and I've been reading bits of it over the past year. Through reading her site it's absolutely obvious that she's a top notch breeder ;).
Is the long and profuse head feathering of the purebred English evident from a young age, or does it come in with the mature molt? I wonder if Mink has some 'regular' budgie blood... It doesn't matter, just curious.
Budgies as babies are sometimes less "fluffy" (english and american budgies alike) and as soon as they mature after their first moult, their faces and heads get more puffy. Of course, some babies are born like absolute puffballs, and some aren't, regardless of their identification as Australian/American or English. Here's my girl Mallorn, as a little baby and then as an adult. You can see that she is noticeably more "fluffy" as an adult. Oh, and she's an American budgie.
I hope this helps! :D
Thanks for the pics of all the beautiful birdies! Looks like both the English and regular types get the 'thicker hair' when mature.
Not all English budgies have the same look
This is true! I have four English and they all look different. One thing in common for full english budgies, they are almost always 45 grams and up, pet type around 28-35. Splits tend to be around 40. I have also noticed that English tend to have a grumpy look to their eyes specifically lol. Also I would agree that their feathers fluff out more during their first year of life. I have seen that with my Benson.
Here are mine
Benson at 3-4 mths
Benson at 7 mths (next to a pet type)
Darby has been fluffy since day one but a different type of fluff
And then there is Church who has the beard look that the others dont have as much, thats him on the right
Then there is Maisie who doesnt have as many head feathers but has the overall stature and grumpy eyes.
Here are some of everyone for comparison
Just took this one of them on the gym:
