Surprise Baby Color!

So, I bred Elrond to Malina. I had thought that Malina was a mauve, DF YF II, spangle. I believe Elrond is a cobalt, goldenface, dominant pied. So, I expected babies to be mauve or cobalt and at least SF YF II. Pied, Goldenface and Spangle were all options. I believe their only baby is Goldenface, but the shock was that he appears to me to be sky, violet! I didn't get my spangle or pied, but I love his current body color. I know it will change when his yellow/golden washes through, but not sure what color that will look exactly.

So is Malina actually a cobalt violet??

As usual, violet doesn't show well in pictures, but the baby, Largo (assuming I'm right about him being male), definitely looks a light lavender, in real life.

Malina:

Elrond:

And "little" Largo. He's actually HUGE! Not sure if it's genetic or because he's a spoiled only baby or a combo. Elrond is quite large himself.

So what do you guys think?

Elrond looks Skyblue to me, and the gorgeous baby could be Cobalt Violet. That likely means that the Mum is Mauve Violet. If Elrond is Skyblue then all the chicks should be Cobalt...

Thanks tonic! This is Elrond's only chick so far. His green/blue looks quite a bit darker then the seafoam of my sky SF YF II birds. That's why I thought he was cobalt. However, he's my only Goldenface, so I don't know if that impacts the body color when it washes through.

Your budgies are beautiful and Largo is just Gorgeous...sorry, I don't know very much about 'colourings', so still learning...he is going to be a large chap! :)

There can be a bit of variation in shade even within one colour. The other option is that the hen is a Violet Grey. Then she could well be mid or light grey and produce any shade of chick. As the chick ages it may become more clear. Has the hen ever had any grey chicks?

Guys--
Wait.
I think Elrond is a sky violet.
There are hints of violet up by the cheek patches, where it's normally visible.
At any rate, Malina looks like she is a violet mauve, like Toni suggested. Down by her rump it looks quite violet.
If they are the ones that had the chicks in the other post, Erin, it's possible both parents are sf violet.
These genetics are crazy!
I don't think Malina could be grey violet--Greys have characteristic grey cheek patches, not blue.
Oh, goodness. What does everyone else think?

Lots of ideas, thank you! And glad I'm not the only one confused. :o

I still think there's a chance Madonna is cobalt violet from looking at Lindsey's pictures, but maybe not!

Starling, these parents are not related in any way to the big clutch I had, with 4 of the 6 being sky violet. They came from two totally different breeders even. And I don't go around looking for violet, it just seems like I find it even without looking!!

Oh, okay. See, then you get confused because if everyone's violet... Yeah, looks like violet, violet, everywhere with your little ones!

Has Elrond ever had a clutch before? Or is this one his first?

Kemnebi 05-20-2015 07:39 PM

Well violet was not something I was planning on specializing in, but it seems I will be, LOL! Nope, this was Elronds first clutch. I had certainly hoped to get more than one. I'm looking forward to crossing him again to get a better idea of what he can produce! Hoping tho at least see nice size, form and feather in Largo.

If you have a sky blue (like, for sure) with no hidden violet, I would breed him with that one because then if any of the chicks turn out sf violet, then you could confirm if Elrond is sf violet or not!
I think he might be....:o
I can't wait to see how little Largo grows up! :D
