Just wanted to show you all a mutation not commonly seen. SLATE, a bluegray color with very dark violet cheekpatches. It is sex-linked.

Here is father and daughter, I just got them from a nearby breeder of slates.

The male is YFII slate, and the daughter is YFII slate opaline.

They are gorgeous! So the colors change to true slate after the first moult, right?
What did you name them? :D

The effect of slate is similar to violet, a darkening and greying of the original colour. The true slate dark grey is seen on a grey slate bird.

The male is a skyblue slate, I am not sure about the daughter, I will have to ask the breeder.

EDIT: I have asked the breeder, and he said the male is a Slate Violet Cobalt, and the daughter is a Slate Skyblue.

Huh, I would definitely said the male was the Skyblue and the chick the Violet if I had to pick!

Slate

Here in the US many judges are not clear on a dark factor slate. and many breeders of slates do not use yellow face or cobalt violet in the breeding to make the most common sky blue slate as clean as possible. We currently have these other slate types in our aviary and we are working to see how well we can produce each distinct color of slate. Some of the rare breeders here in the US are talking about using slate to darken the anthracite.
Blessings, Jo Ann:p
