spangle mutation question

Hi i have a question about the spangle mutation, I have 2 birds currently in the breeding process & on thier 2nd run (this was unexpected btw as the female went out of season just after the last chick was born then came back in a few weeks later). In their 1st clutch they had 4 chicks, 3 boys & a girl, there mutations & colour were as follows-

Boy 1- sky blue normal

Boy 2- sf yellow face, sky blue grey wing

Boy 3- cobalt normal

Girl- sf yellow face, colbalt, grey wing, dominant/ recessive pied (combo pied i think)

Also just want to be clear on something, boys 2 & 3 have small pied patches on the back of thier heads does this mean they are split recessive or something else.

Now the parents are as follows

Female- Cobalt, greywing, dominant/ recessive pied

Male- yellow face type 2, spangle

Now my main question is can any chicks get the spangle mutation from the dad or was i just unlucky with the 1st clutch?

Spangle is not a sex-linked mutation, but it is dominant, so yes, it is possible to get some spangle chicks with this clutch :) Theoretically, half the chicks would be spangle, but luck varies, so you should get some. The chicks and parents sound lovely! Good luck on this clutch :D

Thats good to hear, the dads the only budgie in my flock that has a true spangle mutation, i have some dom pieds with it but it just does'nt look as good as on them, just looks like little dots of black compared to his.

thanks for quick reply.

also if some ones got a answer for the pied patch on the non pieds i'd love to hear it.

EDIT- also i should mention we had 2 dead in shell chicks so maybe those 2 were carrying it, still seems really unlucky though for not 1 of the others to have it:(

Hi there, hopefully you'll get some Spangles soon. Having the Pied in there will be reducing the chances of getting the nice clear Spangle markings as you noticed on the Spangle Pieds you've got. It could be that your combination pied chick is Spangle for instance.

The pied head patch can indicate that they are split for Recessive Pied, or in some uncommon cases can be Dominant Pieds without much pied marking. If you have a combination pied chick it is very likely that they are split for Recessive Pied though.

Pics would be great!

Thanks for the reply tonic, great help, another question though the pied patch on the non pieds would it count as a visual thing because i'd like to try for some proper recessive pieds in the future as its the only type of pied i have never had & i love thier markings & bright colours:).

Not sure what you mean by it counting as a visual thing? It most likely means they are split for Recessive Pied so they could be used to breed some of them.

If the father is not a visual pied budgie then that means he is also split for recessive pied. That would explain the recessive pied chick you had and the pied patches on some of your chicks.
I had the same thing happen with one of my budgie pairs, my normal dark green and normal cobalt budgies Carioca and Mona had a recessive pied chick on their first clutch. And on their second I also got a chick with the pied patch on the back of the head.

Its just that i heard on another furom that to breed for recessive chicks the parents need to be showing it visually, maybe they were wrong i don't know.
Also it wasn't me asking i was just browsing & came across the info above.

Also looking at the info Aluz provided i'm starting to think i got my wires crossed some where lol as he breed 2 nomals & got a reccesive pied, sorry for any confusion i'm still trying to learn about certain mutations & how to breed for them & such.
