Default Slates

Was wondering how rare the slates are? The man I order my seed from breeds them, he has probably 200 maybe more birds. Been doing it for years, used to show and now judges. My dad used to get his seed from him and he[Gordon] has kind of adopted me and mentored me. I really like the slates but he says they are rare and won't seem to come off one

Slate budgies are quite rare. Slate is a colour adding factor similar to grey but not the same. It is sex linked in it's inheritance pattern. Here's a link to some information about Slates

I was wondering if one of mine is a slate, but it is more likely a yellow face violet with two dark factors.

I've never heard of a Slate Budgie before Here's a picture of a slate budgie from google

And background info on the mutation:

"Slate is a color-adding factor similar to grey and violet. Slate produces a very dark bluish grey in white-based budgies. The darkness of the slate varies slightly according to the dark factor of the bird. Slate, like violet, can be present in a green (yellow-based) budgie, but only produces a darkening effect. True slate only appears on blue (white-based) budgies. This variety is extremely rare."

Every website I went through, says that Slate budgies are really rare Does this man have 200 of them? I find that hard to believe.

Although if you live in the UK, this may be true. There has been efforts to try and revive slate budgies Here's some info on it

https://www.bestofbreeds.net/al-nasser/article13.htm

Good luck trying to get one Hope this helps

I think she meant all together he has 200 birds, not just slate otherwise he would probably come off them a lot quicker

LOL.....yes all together he has i would guess 200 birds, all different varieties. We are in Florida, he use to be the head of the Rare and Color Budgerigar Society. He is up there in the years now, I am not certain he even judges any more. He has some remarkable birds though. Lacewings, then there is the other type with red eyes, not lacewings, i cannot think of it now to save my life, anyways point made he has remarkable birds. And has been a great mentor to me as well. He has several slates, but not all his birds are slates, sorry for the confusion on that. Will let you know if I get lucky enough to get one from him. Thanks to all for the help and remember everyone please check out my albums on photobucket -- SueannsBirds -- they are public albums. Thanks again Sueann
