They are beautiful!

Have you bred budgies before?
It is important to breed for temperament as well as appearance.

How old are the budgies you purchased?
Did you get them from a breeder and are you sure they are not related to one another?

I would recommend reviewing the following threads:

Yeah I've a shed full of birds
Been breeding budgies for quite some time
I've got lovebirds, finches, red rumps, kakarikis and barrabands

The advice I've received is find a good big clear wing budgie and breed it with my rainbows keep the best and sell the rest on..
Try this for a couple of seasons with different show type birds and cross the siblings back to each other..
All tips welcomed

Wow They're gorgeous!

Actually, though, not all of them are rainbow. True rainbow is a mixture of a blue series, yellowface or goldenface opaline clearwing or fullbody greywing.
I agree though that finding a big clearwing or fullbody greywing to breed one to would produce some larger chicks. However, interbreeding is not reccomended as the babies are more likely to be born deformed and stunted.

What I personally would do is get a pair of clearwings or fullbody greys and breed one to one rainbow and the other to another rainbow and then cross their biggest chicks.

Yeah I have a super clearwing cock bird here
And I have him ear marked to pair with my best hen
I have a pair of rainbows together at the minute
And I'm just waiting on others to finish off rearing chicks
To free me up some breeding boxes

Thanks for the advice though

I agree with Starling with regard to inbreeding.

Budgies have a shorter life span and more health problems is because inbreeding weakens the gene pool.

Smile Rainbow

Very selective line breeding is sometimes possible, but I would be very reluctant
to do this with a group of rainbows that you have no info on their heritage and if they are first or second generation relatives. This can put a hidden block on life expectancy and other issues as indicated above. Check with your breeder
for genetics on these birds before you make any pairs that may be related. Birth defects etc. are sad issues to deal with. Blessings, Jo Ann
