Default What is Arthur's Mutation?

Arthur was found in our front yard in August of 2014. I've yet to see another parakeet with markings like his and am curious if anyone can identify what he is considered; he exhibits an almost complete lack of barring save for some oversized splotches on his shoulders, a neon green unlike the usual color of a green budgerigar (it's extremely vibrant), and both yellow and blue splotches over his body, visible especially on his belly. Wings are clear, yellow fading to white.

Was tame originally but he became wild over time when housed with our other parakeets.

He is very stunning isn't he. I can see Skyblue, Golden Face, Opaline and Dominant Pied varieties present in him.

The Golden Face causes the yellow, strongest on his mask and paler as it runs down his body. Skyblue is his base colour. Dominant Pied causes the patches with no body colour or markings. Opaline reduces the markings over his head and between his shoulders and puts body colour between his shoulders and on his wings.

What a beautiful little guy! Interesting that he has the clearly separated patches of green and blue both. My Twigs in my sig has some yellow over his blue making it look 'slightly' greenish in areas of his blue patch, but on Arthur the green does look legitimately greener. He's unusual and very pretty.

I find this interesting! Then how do you get such a definitely green patch on the chest (owner said the green is bright) if it is a sky blue?

It is clearly a yellow face bird - the strength of the yellow indicates the actual variety is Golden Face. The Golden Face has caused a strong yellow to cover the blue, yellow + blue = green. The strength of the green in a yellow face bird depends on how much yellow is showing over the blue. You can see the blue down low that shows the true body colour.

Your standard green bird is actually a bird with blue feathers and yellow added. I believe the three yellow face varieties effect the way the yellow is suppressed in the blue bird.

Okay, I was curious because in Twigs' color, you can see where yellow bleeds into his blue, but it still looks like yellow "over" blue rather than in Arthur how the yellow and blue actually mixed to make true green.

Yes, it varies a lot. You can see that Twigs' yellow is paler and so it has less of a 'greening' effect.
