Hi,

I have what I think is a grey greywing male budgie but his cere seems to be staying more of a purple color. The iris rings are also not as visible as in the other budgies for some reason.

I had trouble getting a picture that shows the color the way it look in real life (It looks more blue in the pictures) so I added a picture of the other budgie with a blue a cere for comparison. The blue budgie is also much younger than the gray one but his iris rings are more visible.

I was wondering if I'm correct on his mutation and if these differences are normal.

I don't think the pictures loaded the first time so here they are.

They are all boys. The iris rings don't show up until they get older, and in some mutations, such as recessive pied, they never do.

Hi there!

From the pictures, I think your budgie is a mauve greywing budgie. About the immature colour on his cere and the lack of development of his iris rings, this may very well be due to his parentage. Budgies who are split for recessive pied can have these characteristics.

I have the same thing going on with one of my budgies. One of my now adult chicks (2 years old), Luigi also has the immature deep purplish colour on the cere, his irises haven't fully developed to the white colour and his feet are also pink in colour. Given the fact one of his older sisters is a recessive pied and both of their parents are split for it, the chances are higher of Luigi having inherited the recessive pied gene.

!!! Pretty boy!
By the way, Aluz (above post) really knows her stuff, so I'm sure she's right. I have a male under age 2 who is a greywing (with a recessive pied mom and a normal dad) who has that bright blue/purple cere and no visible iris rings, too. Yours is a beauty for sure.

Hi Judy!

While I know a thing or two about budgies, I may not be full proof right especially when it comes to correctly identifying certain colour mutations.

Thanks!

I looked up mauve budgies and do think his color looks closer to that.

I guess it could be possible he is split for pied. He is a pet store budgie so it's impossible to know for sure but they do get a lot of pied ones. It's interesting how that would show up.

Winter, the grey one is 2 as well which is why I started wondering about him.

Thank you! I fell in love with him at first sight due to his color . He also has a steady, easygoing personality which has been a huge bonus.
