Default Genetics hiding under Ino

Hi all !

If you've seen my recent breeding log, then you've see that my pair Ruby and Starlette have two new babies in the nest.

Ruby (mom) is a Lutino, and has never been bred before. I do not know what she is hiding under her yellow feathers.

Starlette (dad) is a Fallow Rec. Pied. Also his first time being bred.

BOTH babies are showing to be rec. pied. So, this would mean that Ruby is also a rec. pied under her Ino feathers. BUT, if i have this correct, she could also be SPLIT for rec. pied? That would still produce pied babies....with a chance of a regular green female too.

Since there are only two babies in this clutch, (and don't yet know if they are male or female) then it's almost impossible to say if she's masking Rec. Pied or split to Rec. Pied.

Do I have all that straight?

No iris rings! In fact, NONE of my Lutinos have iris rings. Crazy coincidence.

What are the parents of your lutinos?
Could they be dark eyed clears?

If you take a picture with the flash, the light will reveal any irises that may be behind the red ino eyes if you can't see any in natural light. Generally it's very difficult to see ino irises without a bright light, unless I'm mistaken.

I had never thought about telling if an ino is recessive pied that way, chirper, that's a great idea!

You're right that she could either be split or masking

Good to know. I'll have to go more "in depth" on the weekend when I have more time to catch them and try a brighter light source.

Ino budgies do have developed irises (iris develops normally while growing up) only the colour upon reaching adulthood is not really white, it's a reddish/pink colour mingled with white.

I have had and bred Inos who had fully developed irises and others who have never developed them and these latter ones had recessive pied heritage.

Budgies that never develop the white iris rings on the eyes (recessive pieds, dark-eyed clears) will still have a black outline on the eyes and this can be seen when the lighting is directly hitting them (either sunlight or the light from a lamp or flash light, same goes for flash from camera when taking pics).
