Hi there and to the forums!

What a pretty budgie boy you have there I moved your thread to the "Mutations and Genetics" section, by the way

He is a dark green fullbody greywing budgie His markings look too dark to be clearwing, although it definitely is confusing to decide between the two sometimes!

What's his name?

It's great to have you on the forums and you've come to a great place to share all about your budgie(s) as well as learn plenty of new information!

If you have any questions after reading through the basic forum articles and "stickies" (threads "stuck" to the top of each subforum for easy reference), then feel free to ask as we'd love to help

Hope to see you around!

Welcome to talk budgies. I agree with Starling on the mutation and
the assessment of you having one nice looking budgie there....

Hi there, he does look like a full bodied greywing to me too. The reality is that you can get darker clearwings and lighter full bodied greywings so the best we can do is really just an educated guess though.

Are the cheek patches different on a greywing and clearwing?

Yes, a Clearwing has full strength cheek patches, a greywing has paler cheek patches. But a full bodied greywing (which is a bird with both a clearwing and a greywing gene) has full strength cheek patches. So it really comes down to deciding if the markings are pale enough to be a clearwing or dark enough to be a fb greywing, which is obviously pretty arbitrary.

Thank you for clarifying that Toni. So on some birds who don't have ideal markings for their mutation, we would never know truly which one they are, unless we know the parents.

That is right, even knowing the parents may not help as it is likely the less than ideal markings came from them! If the parents are very clearly a clearwing and a greywing then you would know, but if a parent was a fb greywing it gets tricky.
