Question Spangle and ... Clearflight Pied or Dominant Pied? Opaline, too?

A week ago, I adopted this gorgeous cobalt spangle pied from my local animal shelter. I need help determining whether he's clearflight pied or dominant (AKA banded) pied, and whether he's also opaline.

His body is solid blue except for a small clear/white patch below his right wing (see first photo). This mark is the only reason I wonder if he's dominant pied. The primary wing feathers are clear and most of the secondary wing feathers are spangle; 2-3 secondaries on left wing might be clear (or just very faint spangle), but even if they're clear, he could still be cf pied or dom pied. His tail is clear. Of course, he has the pied thumbprint on the back of his head. His feet are pied (mottled pink and blue-grey skin.)

So is he poorly marked clearflight pied? Or poorly marked dominant pied?

I'm also wondering if he's opaline. The top of his head is blue instead of black and his spangle wing feathers appear to be trimmed in blue instead of black.

I can take more photos if you like. (Sorry for the blurry second photo.)

Thanks!

He is a tricky one! Firstly, I don't think he is opaline, but I can see how he could be on be so....

As far as pied goes, spangles are tricky as sometime the markings on the flights are pretty non-existant and they can also have small areas of body colour missing without being a pied. However, I think he is a pied of some sort.

It is really going to be a guess as to whether he is dominant pied or clearflight though. He is either a lightly pieded dominant pied, or a clearflight with more pied patches than usual....not very helpful is it!

The only way to be sure is through breeding, otherwise go with which ever you want and just know you may be wrong....

Thanks for responding, Toni!

I don't think so, either, because his head has normal barring instead of reverse barring and he does not have V-shaped body color down his back (like my dark green opaline - see photo).

Very interesting about spangles. This bird is my first sf spangle. Thanks for info! As for pied, his pied feet helped to convince me he's pied rather than spangle split to pied. I had a dom pied with same mottled feet (see second photo).

Quite honestly, I was expecting the experts like you to say this.

Unfortunately, I doubt I'll breed him and so I shall "deem" him to be spangle clearflight pied.

He is beautiful! He is sky blue, double factor violet, single factor spangle, probably clearflight pied

Congratulations on adopting him!

Thank you for your assessment and congrats! I was wondering if he was sky blue violet but I settled on cobalt to be safe. And it's great you confirmed he's probably cf pied.

Thank you. He's my first sky blue violet budgie, sf spangle budgie and clearflight budgie.

He's tame, too.

As others have said, he is absolutely gorgeous! I've absolutely love the blue on the back of his head!

I posted a thread a while back for my budgie, Hermes, when I was also trying to figure out his pied heritage Here's the link if you want to take a peek at it; it may offer some other insight. https://talkbudgies.com/mutations-gen...ight-pied.html I ended up the same place as you...know he's a pied of some sort and ended up deeming my guy a clearflight as well. Don't you love mutations?

Also, what did you end up naming this handsome fellow? And it's so great that you got him from your shelter!

Thank you for the compliment and for sharing the discussion regarding your lovely boy, Hermes. Have you bred him? And if so, what type of chicks did he produce?

I read the whole thread. I'm so glad no one suggested my bird might be dutch pied or frosted pied. That's too complicated for me.

I haven't named him yet, although I have considered "Sherlock" for the Benedict Cumberbatch TV series about Sherlock Holmes. I've also considered "Benny" (short for Benedict) but I already have a budgie named Ben (his clutch brother is Jerry, as in Ben and Jerry's ice cream).
