Default New Female Bird

Hi there,

After all of the discussion on my decision to breed, I decided to buy another young budgie and raise her, along with my male Atticus, rather than buying a proven pair.

Today, I bought a baby female girl. She is not a cobalt, but she is a yellow face. They had some really pretty cobalts, but I couldn't get past her, she is so pretty. It's kind of hard to tell in the pictures, but she has a very faint light yellow face. Her coloring actually looks more aqua colored in person. In the pictures she appears very blue, and she is blue but there seems to be a green tint. I think she is a yellow face type II. I am not sure if she is sky blue or not, she is definitely darker than Atticus (who I learned is a sky blue dominant pied greywing, thanks to others on this list). I am hoping that others will help me with identifying the mutation of the new girlie, who doesn't yet have a name, but may be Lucille.

She is, of course, quarantined from my other birds but will move in with Atticus when it is safe.

Here she is:

I hope those of you who are experienced will help me determine what might be produced by breeding her with my Atticus.

Thank you!

Vicki

She is beautiful! Congratulations on the new little sweetheart. I'm glad to hear she is in quarantine.

I'm afraid I won't be of any help to identify the mutation, but I did want to tell you how gorgeous she is anyway.

Yf Opaline, that's for sure. Probably sky blue, too..the shade will differ between birds. Anyway, she is amazing, I know why she caught your eye!!

Thanks you guys! Ok, can you tell me if she is YF type I or II? I think II because in the store she looked so much greener than the others. The other blues were not YF and looked much bluer. There were two YF and they had more of a greenish tint, but when I got her home she looked more blue.

Also, please tell me how she is Opaline. I have been reading (and reading and reading) about all the mutations and I have a hard time understanding that one.

Finally, if she is bred to Atticus, will they only produce Sky Blues? Am I right in thinking that they would produce sky blue normals, sky blue dominant pieds and sky blue YF?? Remember Atticus is my sky blue dominant pied greywing

Thank you!

Vicki

Yellow face opaline sky blue.

You can tell she is opaline by the thin barring on her head and neck and by the body colour showing between the black markings on her wings

At the moment the yellow face type looks like it could be type 1, but often a type 2 will look like a type 1 until it has completed it's 1st moult. So you will need to wait to be sure which type she is

Mated to a dominant pied greywing sky blue the chicks would be about 25% each of normal sky blue, yellow face sky blue, dominant pied sky blue & yellow face dominant pied sky blue. Provided neither bird is split for anything

If the the cock bird is split for opaline you would get 50% opaline. If the hen is split for greywing you'd get 50% greywing. These mutations would combine with the others. Other recessive or sex-linked mutations are possible because we can't see hidden genes
