Default What mutations are my guys?

Hi All,
I am wondering what mutations my two budgies are. I am new to budgies and wondered what sort of offspring this pair would have if I was to breed them.
Thanks in Advance

Hi Donna

Your budgies are beautiful!

The hen (Kensi?) is mauve, yellowface II, single factor dominant pied, normal and the male (Deeks?) is light green, opaline, single factor dominant pied.

All girls in a clutch would be opaline, half the babies would be SF dominant pied, a quarter of the babies would be non-pied, and a quarter would be DF dominant pied. Unless Deeks is split for blue, all babies will be green-based.

Keep in mind that they're too young to breed and you shouldn't breed them until you have a year or more of breeding experience!

I agree with Star.

It is extremely important that all members recognize before breeding any species, it is important to learn as much about the animals, their personalities and the best practices to follow for responsible and ethical breeding prior to making the commitment to take on the responsibility.
This requires extensive research and an openness to continual learning.

Default Thanks!

Hi Faery and Star,
Thanks so much for the fast responses. When I first got the birds I was told by the breeder that the Hen was probably male.. so got the name Deeks! I purchased the other bird not long after, and decided what the heck and called it Kensi... so that,s the reason they have cross gendered names They are both close to 2 years old now and given they are a gendered pair I was curious as to whether to breed them.

I will look at the posts and forum before considering breeding them. Its coming into summer here so will be too hot for another few months in any case.It starts to cool down around April so I hope to have a better knowledge by then.

Thanks again for your help!

Kensi,

They are beautiful budgies! I had better not look at them too long or my bird will get jealous.

Starling Wings (and others): How do you know that they are too young to breed? I am curious more about how you are guessing age from the pictures. The hen appears over a year to me because of her cere but otherwise with pied birds, I am wondering how you tell?

Thanks!

The male budgie does not yet have a fully blue cere and has no irises yet Both budgies have to be of age to breed safely, not just one of them. I agree that the hen is at least a year old.

I can't really see the males eye clearly enough to see if there is an iris, but the cere looks right for an adult male. Dominant pieds often have patches of pink on the cere, especially if they are split for recessive pied, which also can cause no iris ring.

Hi All, my male is at least 15 months old and only has one iris ring! He is a strange little fellow!
