What would these two be classified as?
So, I've raised these two from hatchlings. (is that the correct term?) Lila is my 5-year-old male and was hatched from Simon (Yellow face I Cobalt blue Opaline) & female L.B. (Light Green Normal). Banana is my 4-year-old female hatched from my male Garfunkle (Cobalt, double factor violet, normal) and my female BlueBerry (Sky Blue Opaline). So that is their history. These two have taken a fancy to each and Banana has laid her first egg but it cracked. So I'm wondering what their mutations are and what to expect from their babies? Any help is appreciated. It's hard to see in pictures but Lila, the green one, has a dark teal blue tail. :lovie 1::green plet:
Lila is a light green opaline budgie, but opaline is a sex-linked gene, so his mum L.B would have HAD to be opaline for him to be. Because males need two copies of the opaline gene to express it, for him to be opaline he would need one copy of the gene from his mum and from his dad. The only explanation is that L.B actually is opaline :)
Banana is a cobalt single factor violet normal budgie.
All the female babies will be opaline, as they will have inherited the only copy of the gene they need from their dad Lila. Since he's also split for blue, you'll get some blue babies and some green babies, either light green/sky blue or dark green/cobalt.
It's really not recommended you breed budgies older than four years of age due to the increase in potential complications during this time (much like women over 40 have a higher risk of complications in pregnancy). If Banana has already laid eggs, be sure that this is the last time you breed them
Beautiful birds you have! :) You’ve been given great advice above. Looking forward to seeing the chicks. Be sure to take a look at our breeding section, for some useful information.
Thank you both StarlingWings & RavensGryf. The colors of their parents are from what I was told many years ago so I'm glad to have a clarification on the opaline info. I will post pictures of babies if we get any. So far Banana has dropped 2 eggs in the cage but hasn't opted for the nesting box. I have them on a breeding diet and this will be the only time I let her breed. I had great success on my other 2 clutches so I'm hoping for similar results this time. Seems a little odd to me that they have been together for almost the entire 4 years and they are just now interested in breeding. They have had the option since Banana was around 1 1/2 years old. I have re-read many of the breeding post here and other articles online as it has been 4 years since I had a clutch. Thanks again! :green budgie::blue lovie:
