Bumble Foot?

three brand new babies one is still in nest box
of the two that came outside one bled to death over night. it is just a large lump on their foot and if knocked they will bleed. operation is 400 $ per budgie with A 50 50 % of the budgie dying. the budgie in the breeding box i thimk is getting neglected not sure what to do

I'm so sorry for your loss! :(

This does not sound like bumble foot. Especially since the budgies in question are so young. When the vet told you it would cost $400 to operate, did they tell you what could be wrong? I don't see why they would operate on such a young bird. It couldn't possibly be tumours since they only just fledged. :S

If you haven't already, I think you should get these babies to a Certified Avian Vet. This does not sound good. :(

Any chance you can post photos of the lumps?

Oh my goodness! I didn't expect them to be so big!

Do you mind if I post that photo on another forum to see if anyone on there knows what's going on? I have no idea what that could be. :(

that photo looks like a large mass of muck from the nest. i have occasionally had some build up around the toe nails, and are quite hard to remove, they set like concrete!

if the feet are bleeding i imagine it would not be coming from the lump itself but from the foot? if so then i would think the lump is muck and would need to be soaked in warm water to be removed. if left it could cut off the blood supply to the toes.

i am not sure why it would cause a budgie to bleed to death though? where was the blood coming from? ws it near the lump on the foot?

The picture shows something hard and crusty is stuck to both feet. On the right foot, it's stuck to front and back toenails. On left foot, it's stuck to the back toenail.

Does the lump itself bleed, i.e., does it have a blood supply, indicating it's a tumor?

Or is the lump simply hardened debris, and when the debris was knocked off the baby's toe, the toenail came out, causing the baby to bleed to death? Does the inside of the nestbox have similar debris? (Please post a photo of the inside of the nestbox.)

If it's debris, then you are going to have to be very, very careful to thoroughly soak it in water until it's soft enough to simply fall off the foot. Do NOT pull on the toenails!

It looks like muck from the nest to me too. As Tonic has said you'll need to soak it in warm water to soften it enough to remove it. Be careful you don't hurt the chick when you do it

Nest boxes should be cleaned regularly when the chicks are growing and nesting material should be added to soak up some of the poop

to me it just looks like poo and muck

once born you need to clean their feet when musky, or this does occur
the same with their beaks

it's worth soaking it in tepid water
it can take a while and slowly pick bits off

hopefully it's just muck and will just take some elbow grease off you
have cocktail sticks, cotton wool ear buds to hand

do this is low light and keep the budgie calm in a towel with it's eyes covered

hopefully you will start seeing bits breaking off, best of luck

i would just like to thank everyone for their replies you all have given me hope. i dont know how the budgie died apart from it bleeding but when i picked the dead body up the lump was gone unless it got ripped off causing it to bleed. it makes much more sense that it is muck, my budgies arnt that tame so i hate lifting up lids on their boxes because they scream and im afraid they will ditch the babies but the box is filthy with poo and i thought it was just natural and since the boxes are bolted to the wall there isnt really away to clean it.
i am happy for people to post on other sites as any info is precious to me.
i am really afraid to put it in a bath because i dont know what im doing. wold a vet do this for me?
another thing is the lumps are only on the back toes but in the pic it just looks like it has grown on both front and back but the lump is just on the back
thanks again for all your replies.
