Default Chicks' Mutations and Colors Pt 2

This is a follow up of this thread: https://www.talkbudgies.com/showthread.php?t=53120

The parents: Violet grey green opaline cock split for blue X Albino hen (yellow from mineral block)

The chicks

Chick 1 - Grey green opaline

He looks a bit lighter than dad and his cheek patches are more greyish looking so I'm assuming he doesn't have the violet factor.

Chick 2 - Violet skyblue opaline

His color is much more vibrant in person. He has a very purple tinge to him especially under the sun, almost fluorescent I would say. His cheek patches are violet like dad's.

Chick 3 - Grey opaline

Grey cheek patches.

Chick 4 - Grey green opaline?

This one's got me so confused. He has green and blue tail feathers as well as flight feathers. His color is more vibrant like dad and his cheek patches are also violet. Could he be a dark green instead? I have a dark green and they don't look similar to me

Also here's another question.. I don't know how the grey factor works, can the gene be carried or does it have to be visual? Like lets say the second chick. He is a violet skyblue can he carry the grey factor or not? How does that work?

hi there,

lovely chicks. grey is dominant so it cannot be carried, it shows if it is present.

i think you are right with the colours. the last one sounds like a green rather than a grey green. not sure what shade.... possibly an olive if it looks more like a greygreen than a dark green.

Grey cannot be carried it is always visual. There is a recessive grey mutation but it has largely died out and is not the type your cock has. Since the last chick has a blue tail it cannot be grey green as grey always makes the tail black regardless of dark factor or violet factor (plus it greys out the cheek patches).

It is most likely an olive, but it could be a violet dark green or even a violet olive green but i think it is likely just an olive.

Thank you both for clearing that out for me

Now on the last chick. He couldn't be an olive since the second chick is a skyblue and I know that skyblue and olive can't be possible in the same clutch. Since grey green is ruled out he can either be a dark green or a light green. He is definitely not a light green so he has to be a violet dark green then?

Here are some more photos of the last chick from today, flash and no flash.

The one on the left, both pictures.

hi there,

it looks like an olive to me...or maybe a violet dark green with that blue tint...

you can get skyblue and olive in the same clutch if both parents are the medium shade, meaning they both have one dark factor and one non-dark factor... then they can have chicks with 2 non-dark factors (ie skyblue) and chicks with two dark factors (ie olive).

so if he is an olive then your greygreen cock is a medium greygreen and your albino is a cobalt ino...

You can get both sky blue and olive in the same clutch provided both parents have one dark factor

Toni is right

If the cock has one dark factor and the hen is also dark factor then the chicks would roughly be 25% sky blue / light green (zero dark factor) 50% cobalt / dark green (1 dark factor) and 25% mauve / olive (2 dark factors). Meaning in a clutch of four you could expect one chick zero dark factor, 2 chicks 1 dark factor and 1 chick 2 dark factors.

Very possible in the same clutch.

I still think the chick is either a violet dark green or violet olive.
